Unless it has been molested with other paint it would be a 1967.

nice find. I have a 1961, best engine ever made (some could argue otherwise :) )

You will have to inspect for cracked coils.-------I believe that motor has a plate on top of the flywheel.--Take the plate off and have a look at the coils.---Likey a very good idea to install a waterpump impeller too.-----And yes they are a nice running motor if in good condition.

+1. Looks like a mid-late 60s JW model. Great little motors. There should be a small metal tag riveted to the transom clamp with the model and serial number. Here's a handy link. You can get any routine parts you need to fix her up right here at iboats.

3 HP Evinrude Johnson Outboard Tune-Up Procedure 1952-1967

Thanks to all. I will look tonight for the model. Its been sitting in my father-in-la's barn for years. He says it was the best little motor he's had! Gone get it running for him... as of now there is no spark. Working on that... Another question, anyone have any good ways to cleaning the gas tank. It is full of rust.

go out an buy a pack of bb's ( 1000 is just a few bucks) pour them into the tank.....and shake the crap out of it at all angles! then remove the filter from the tank and recover the bbs and dust. wash it out with water a few times. ( you may have to wash and reuse the bb's for another good shaking!) soak the scintered metal filter in carb cleaner or similiar and blow it out with compressed air.

You may already know this, but to get the fuel tank off take out the long mounting screws on top of the starter housing. Take off the fuel pipe assembly at the shut-off valve, and lift the tank off the mounting plate tilting and turning as necessary to lift the shut-off valve through the plate. You can then work on the tank and the valve, and access the inspection hole cover on top of the flywheel.

Can't find any cracks. Maybe new points?

For rust removal you may need to use electrolysis. How bad is it? This has worked well for me.

really doesn't look too bad. I would probably clean the connections and clean/reset points, and see if you have good spark. I's not hard to get in and out with the 3.

Well the coils have been done. Condensors original though.

May just need the points dressed/cleaned and re gapped.

Put a piece of wet/dry around a hacksaw blade, and run it through many times. Blow of with compressed air. Set to 020. Then clean with Laquer thinner or acetone. Dip a business card, or paper stock in it and run it through.

plug wires and the springs in the boots probably need attention, and the plugs themselves should at least be cleaned up and regapped if you are testing for spark with the plugs.

Off the motor of course, pine sol / water 50/50 combined with the bbs will clean it all out in a day or two. Getting all the pine-sol rinsed out is a bear but worth it for a clean tank.

The spark should jump a 1/4' open air gap. Plugs tell you nothing. Get an open air gap spark tester.

Re: Johnson 3hp what model and year

agree on the tester, but if fooling around using the plugs make sure they are freshened up at least. On the tank, I haven't tried BBs, but have had some success using a handful or so of marbles.

Re: Johnson 3hp what model and year

I was burned years ago by using a plug for a spark tester. After my mentor beat me in the head, I learned the correct way.
