I have a Johnson 30 horse, probably 70's vintage (not sure). It starts and idles fine, but when I give it more throttle, it "chokes out". Can't seem to get more than the higher end of the low idle out of it. Replaced fuel tank and lines, replaced the plugs, cleaned fuel filter and all the linkages are intact. Any suggestions?

what the model # in transom bracket. sounds like a classic case of dirty carbs, needing deep cleaning, and removing the high & low speed jets, rebuild kit.

TD is right, probably the low speed jet, which will get serviced in your carb rebuild. You will need a special tool to get the jets out, here is a pic TD and FR have posted a few times.

THis is the location of the transom bracket tag that he spoke of.

If the tag has been removed for whatever reason, look for the welch plug, it should be located at the top rear of the motor, it is about the size of a quarter, shiny and should look like this.Thank TD for this pic as well.
