johnson 225 2 stroke overheated now won't start

My buddy asked me to come take a look at his motor. He said the overheat alarm went off, then let it cool down fired it up and drove back to dock. Now it wont start. It turns over fine. I'm not to familiar with johnson engines. I pulled a plug to check spark. It's there but seems weak. Thats all I could do before it got dark. Plan on doing a compression test tomorrow. I'm leaning torwards an electrical issue, if the overheat didn't cause internal damage. Is there any fuses that might have popped when it overheated? Or, does anyone have some knowledge they would like to share with me to help solve problem?

Well need more info on the motor to help. Need year. I would start with compression, then go to spark with a spark gap checker, and finally fuel system. Bet no problems with the fuel system.

Didn't get a chance to look at it yet, but it's a 1996. Hoping to look at it tomorrow.

there is an overheat sensor on each head right in the middle of two of the sparkplugs i believe the one on the left bank has two wires and the one on the right bank has one wire unplug these and try to fire my sensors on mine just went out and when they do that they set the alarm off and it tells the engine to cut off three cylinders from getting spark i would try this and see if it works first then if it doesnt fix it go onto check compression...etc.. hope this helps

If overheated and weak spark, it is a risk that:
1: Power pack has been damaged.
2: Stator has melted.
Off with flywheel and check stator.
Check stator output to power pack.
Check power pack output to coils.
DVA meter needed to get it correct.

OK, so I had a little day light after work. I tried unplugging the temp sensors n still didn't start. Then did compression check, lowest pressure 98 highest 112. I know its getting fuel because all the plugs had it on them, so I am thinking an ignition problem. I pulled out my buddys meter to try and pin point problem, but his meter was jacked. I did notice something that looked like melted plastic under the fly wheel where the coils are. I will be there this weekend with my meter and plenty of daylight. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The DVA meter and an OEM factory service manual for specs are the two biggest things you'll need to check out the ignition system correctly.

Sorry to butt in this thread but am trying to send you a PM but your box is full. Just wondering if you have any more pics of your '71 Starcraft?? Just purchased a '76 that I am rebuilding and really like the looks of yours but cannot find many pics.

Haven't got a DVA meter yet, but i did go over with my volt meter. The coil packs are not getting any power from the coil under the fly. I'm thinking that the coil got hot and melted, because I see some melted plastic under there. Thiis would explaing the weak and erratic spark its getting. Any thoughts?

Yep. That woud do it, but a normal multimeter will not give you a proper reading that a DVA would. So 50/50 chance that is it...... But if you are unwilling to purchase the proper devise at a cost of around $30 to diagnose this part, then the $200-$300 for the new part is nothing at at all to worry about......

But not to be hugely sarcastic it could be your startor, retifier, and power pack, they all both go..... only a DVA and a factory service manual will tell you what component if faulty....
