did that genius really put the flywheel that slipped back on without lapping them together? i think this is the same guy that put a V6 looper together without the taper pin because he "couldn't find it".
Well just started reading about lapping. off to work yap later.

The flywheel key is ONLY there to put the flywheel in the correct position!-----The flywheel is driven by the locking tapers when properly torqued.----Flywheel must be assembled clean and dry.----Note in some years the flywheel key was the same part on a 9.9 HP and a 300 HP OMC outboard.

the factory manual walks you right through the proper procedure, in the correct order. the key when checking ignition and its not the stop circuit is to follow the manual steps IN ORDER. its tempting to skip steps, but doing that makes it more confusing. for these simple tests (whole ignition takes me maybe 15-20 min) you will need a meter with a cheap DVA adapter, test leads, and some common sense haha

Thanks, I picked up one of those dva adapter awhile back thinking I was going to be at this point sooner or later.

Any recommendations for lapping compounds appreciated.
So far these seem to be in use for flywheel. Opinions welcomed.

Loctite 1777012 Clover Grinding and Lapping Compound, 2-oz.​

  • 280 fine grit silicone carbide

Permatex 80037 Valve Grinding Compound, 3 oz.​

the Permatex 80037 is by far the way to go. the clover stuff is WAY too fine in my opinion. grit # appears to be the same, but unless i had a finer version of the clover, its not effective unless you want to sit there for an hour moving the flywheel back and forth

Some diamond grit lapping compound would work quickly.

Im just asking and don't want to be said "I'm over thinking it.
Looks like the diamond grits come in a much higher grit than the other two mentioned. Also sold as a kit with multiple grits. What grit is recommended or work up to/280 or past 280.

Fine silicon carbide will be the stuff to use.-----After one try you will see how much lapping needs to be done to get the perfect fit / match of the tapers.

i mean technically youd want it to cut 1st, then finish with 320+ grit . never had an issue just with permatex though. leaves a perfect frosty look and you can easily see the low spots where it didnt touch so you can get it all out with another attempt or 2

Your local automotive store will have what you need for about $15 or so !!!-----Or borrow a few dabs at your local garage !
