Don't adjust the idle speed at the cable, adjust it at the idle adjustment screw first then adjust the cable to suit.

A quick Google will show you where the idle adjustment screw is located.

Looking for numbers between cylinders within 10% of each other. I would try a couple more times to make sure it's not your technique -- might find they are closer than what you measured.

Thanks for everyone's help and advice. I'm going to be away from the boat for a while. I only visit the lake to mow, cut brush, and work on broken things. I go home to relax.

[FONT=&quot] I'm back now after a number of things, including a flooded relative in Baton Rouge. I ran out of time to do all this myself so I called the son of the person who sold me the boat in 1988. He had it running in 5 hours. Two new control cables, a new stator, replaced plugs, and proper adjustment resulted in an engine that runs smoother than anything I ever remember, even when it was new. Will try to ski behind it next Saturday. Thanks again to everyone for the encouragement and advice.
