Re: Johnson 15 pull rope/cord help.

Hey guys,

new to the site! I have a quick question here. I see you didn't take off the flywheel to do this job. I was under the impression I had to take it off in order to get the recoil out and off the engine block, then replace the rip cord.

I'm working on a 9.9 from the 70's and trying to replace the rip cord. So, I can just leave the
recoil in and do this job!?

Thanks!

Don't remove the flywheel, remove the recoil starter assembly.

No need to remove the flywheel. What I did when I had that guys problem (broken pulley) was to remove the air silencer as well. Made the job a lot easier. I then positioned the pulley into the spring properly and then I just wrapped the rope around the pulley without the need for tension until the recoil assembly was right up to where the rope handle is on the motor. Then I pulled back creating tension to where the recoil goes on the motor and inserted the holding bolt.

Done. Only took me about 6 times to figure that out. lol.
