Re: Jetski behavior

My "Story":

Just last week I had to fuel the boat up. After spending my $680 I decided to snag a weeknight ride. Get into the non no wake area, 3400 RPM, enjoying the beautiful weather. All of a sudden... they arrive. Jet Skis. Two of them, younger guys. It was the thing of nightmares. I hoped they haden't seen my 30' express cruiser in the 1/8 mile wide river. But low and behold, they did. They locked onto me like fighter pilots at war. I pass their "home port" (a small dock with other young punks waiting in line for a turn) and see them swing around to come follow me. My biggest fear came true. These hooligans had the NERVE to come and "jump" my wake. Unreal. The first one hits the wake good, comes down and rides out of the channel. Is he... I think... yup, he spins around for ANOTHER TIME. Now, I have him coming back, and the second one doing it.

OMG this is just insane. These fleas think they have the right to come and use MY wake for their own enjoyment. Can't they find a nice section of river to fish on???

As luck would have it, they decided not to stray too far from home port, and spun back. Phew, I was in the clear. Just me, my father and the afternoon sun. But I spoke to soon. The journey down river had to come to an end. Spin the boat around and head back. As I round the bend, the jet skiiers are there. Perched in the water, WAITING for me. They MUST have known I had to come back trough. Useless fleas decide to start jumping my wake AGAIN. UNREAL if you ask me. Needless to say I dropped her off plane, and idled by. They were throwing beer cans at me, screaming, swearing... nearly boarded my boat because I didn't play thie game.

:D

Just kidding. This story is true, had a couple of them use my wake for a good time. On the way back I dropped her down into the 2500 RPM range, and got her plowing a nice BIG wake. These guys spent a good 10-15 minutes enjoying themselves. I spent half the time watching them have fun, the other half making sure the river was clear in front of the boat. I almost wanted them to come closer and try and snag the larger part of the wake. They seeme content staying back 75' or so. After that they came along side, waved and took off back home. I brought her back up to 3400 and headed to my slip.

I think in this day and age, with the internet, it seems NOONE is tolerant of anyone else but themselves. I couldn't imagine another boater could bother someone so much that the responses posted here seem to indicate. Even if/when I have someone on the water do something I personally wouldn't do, I couldn't imagine freaking out and going off like some posts online suggest.

OH well, enjoy the water guys. Hope and pray one day your the only one out there!

Re: Jetski behavior

I'm with Mustang. I don;t get why people start whining about others jumping their wake--it's behind you, all in the past, adn not your problem if they hit it wrong. The only legit concerns are the ones coming too close to the stern as to endanger you, or approaching from the bow too close, or abeam.

Back before jet skis, there were 13' whalers, in which we 14 year olds lurked, waiting for the big tub yacht or, best of all, tug boat! River rats and proud of it. In the right conditions, this old man in an old man boat will create some wake for you--and I get that urge to go after the tugs to this day. Got good waves off a 75' yacht just last weekend....in my 21.

Re: Jetski behavior

I'd be ok with this jet ski being close to the structure I fish. Locally we call it the deep hole. :) Sorry about the shaky vid. First day with the new camera.

That's just someone playing with geese, I've done that too and I PROMISE if you would report me and I'd be harassed for that, I would find out who you were and you would be reported, if not sued, by me for harassment. There is no law that says I can't chase geese, ducks or any other animal on my jet ski. You don't like it? Look the other way.

Quit hating jet skis, quit hating jet skiers. With people's attitudes like this, I'll just have to stop towing you people in like I have in the past. Leave your jet ski hating asses where they belong, paddling your i'm-better-than-you bass boats to shore.

I am not talking to you specifically, I just quoted your post because you had the video. This would go for anyone.

Re: Jetski behavior

Ok, who has been on one of the sit down jet ski's?
They are pretty damn boring. Really, all you can do is go and turn.
"jumping" on one of these is really a joke. You cant, there is just too much ski.

Now, a stand-up! thats a jet ski. I can get some pretty high jumps. Oh how boaters must hate me.

I just float and wait for a wake-board boat to come by, then make my approach. You only really get one jump off the wake, as the boat is much faster than the jet ski.

The best time is when a tour boat comes by. HUGEEEEEEEE wake. best jumps.

A way to get rid of them is to just stop when they are behind you. I get the hint pretty quickly when that happens.

Or, turn this on. It hurts.

Re: Jetski behavior

I am pro water craft and pro let people enjoy the water and have been polite. As a guy with no temper at all It saddens me that something as simple as riding a jet ski can get you stereotyped by boaters.

As annoying as cyclists on the road are, I understand and APPRECIATE their right to be there.

Why does that not surprise me in the least?...
There are many terms that civilised people would use to describe the "sport" of running at geese, but "playing" is not one of them.

Re: Jetski behavior

Whoever said a person on a jetski is a jerk but put him in a boat and he's a good guy is insane.

A jerk is a jerk is a jerk. Doesn't matter what they ride or drive land or sea.

I've seen jerk kayakers out there, lets not get started on sailboaters that come within two feet of you when you're on the hook.

I own a jetski and for about five years it was my only mode of transportation on the water. I did jump waves and wakes from boaters. However none of them seemed to care. I even had great fun when the people on the boats would cheer and clap after getting some really big air!!

This ski was used to bring myself out to relax on the islands. Which it did quickly, cheap on gas and was a breeze to anchor. I know of more then a few jetski owners who use it to just get them out to the islands to relax as well.

You really should not stereo type all of us. What's funny is that for some reason I read these types of stories all the time. The thing in common is that it seems like all the problems occur on lakes or rivers. We hardly see any bad jetski behavior here on the ocean.

Actually, it is law in most if not all places that you are not allowed to harass wildlife and I would call chasing ducks or geese wildlife, so yeah, you would deserve to get stopped and ticketed. If you want to have some fun, get some empty milk jugs and paint them orange and set up a bouy course to ride around or something. Chasing animals is just plain dumb.

Re: Jetski behavior

...just to step in here....we had a couple of muscovy ducks one year at Christmas instead of the 'ol cooked, standard goose angle...and they were great. Not only that but I recommend a whole raft full of root vegetables with it...you'll love it.
I think we should all think about this.
.....sorry what was this thread about again?

Re: Jetski behavior

Please show me the louisiana law stating this.

From the Louisiana Handbook of Boating Laws and Responsibilities

http://www.boat-ed.com/la/handbook/oper.htm

"Reckless Operation is operating a vessel in a manner that causes danger to others or their property. Examples of illegal, reckless operation are:

* Boating in a restricted area such as a marked swimming area
* Weaving through congested waterway traffic
* Swerving at the last possible moment in order to avoid collision
* Chasing, harassing, or disturbing wildlife"

It don't matter who you show this too..... Fact is they should already know right from wrong and are the reason we have to write laws in the first place..... can't fix stupid, but with laws in place we can punish for it.;)

Re: Jetski behavior

I probably would have enjoyed one when I was a teenager, but now my testosterone levels have fallen into non-toxic levels and I kind of don't see the point.

Apart from the noise, some of the folks on them are just way too unpredictable and given the speed it is hard to know where they are going. I get very nervous if they are around me when I tow the kids on the raft.

I also have a 16 foot boat and when they get too close it makes it hard to fish because the wakes knock me around.

My father is 64 and he still rides his '96 Polaris SL760, he loves that thing... He likes to take it out on Lake Norfork on weekdays when the water is smooth and blasts around in the coves.

Re: Jetski behavior

mustang -- awesome post. I really don't understand the issue with skis jumping wakes. I love to watch them.

waterinfuel -- sorry bud if i saw you do that i would get your numbers try my best to keep you in the water and call the DNR without hesitation. if you want to try and sue me for that have at it. I hate people that harass wildlife for no reason.
oh here in wis you would lose your jetski for it as any property used to harass wildlife gets confiscated. I personally knew a guy who lost his truck, his rifle and his camper for poaching deer.
