japanese made 60 hp mariner

i'm working on older 60 hp mariner model 675 l 31348
just replaced powerhead, but can't get the lower end off to work on the water pump, The driveshaft was fused to the head but managed to get it free, manual says the shift rod has locknut and threaded connector but don't see one, I think the shift rod is the problem. Anyone with any ideas would be appreciated. Are parts still available for this motor?

Some/ many parts are available from Mercury dealers.
Check for availability at mercruiserparts dot com

Not sure if the shift rod has a treaded union or not.
If it does, it may be covered by an access plate.
What manual are you using?

To remove lower unit, you have to remove the 4 bolts on the sides of the unit.
Also have to remove the trim tab above the prop.
Then up inside the trim tab pocket, there is another hidden bolt that must be removed.

Just found time to look for hidden bolt under trim tab,sure enough removed it, lower end came right off (after a little wiggling) turns out the shift shaft has a splined end does'nt show that in my seloc manual. Did something come off the spline that needs to be retrieved before assembly?

I also just started working on a Japanese 60hp Mariner #675 L 31872. I can't seem to find a build date, or too much online. I need to change the gear lube but don't know how much to add. Any help would be great.

not sure about your motor, but all of mine have a bolt on the very bottom of the prop housing, a slotted screwdriver to remove, and another bolt higher up looks the same, you can remove both screws, and use a small pump specially made for this, and pump the oil into the lower screw hole untill it comes out the top screw hole, when the motor is standing upright. thats how all 4 of my outboard require the gear oil change. yours could be different.
