I have a 1971 Merc 9.8, that seems to ouput more oil than it consumes? Recently got this motor and after running it in a barrel for a while there was a thick slick of pure black crud on the top of the water. I took the motor out and a big pool of thick black sludge proceeded to drain from the prop. I've confirmed the gear oil is fine. I think some of it was previously lined on the inner walls, so I ran it for quite a while to flush it out. Having done that it still seemed to smoke a fair bit and leave an oil slick in the barrel.
I made sure I was using new gas and I mixed the oil to 50:1. I was told it was running rich and to dilute further so now it is between 55 and 60:1, but it still smokes a bit and leaves a bit of an oil slick behind, though not as bad.
So question is, can I really afford to dilute mixture further or do I risk seizing up the motor? How lean can I go without concern?
Thanks!
