Ok, so half of my boat is ground out and I'm going to be redoing the transom this weekend. I'm lucky in that the transom is only goes where the outboard is mounted and does not run the length of the stern.

Anyway, after reading all the posts I could I'm thinking of the following:

1. Two pieces of 3/4 inch AC plywood
2. Bond together with PL adhesive
3. Apply resin to all surfaces and allow to dry
4. Sand and apply CSM and resin both front and back
5. Glue new Transom to the hull with PL adhesive
6. Fiberglass Transom to the hull with layer of roving and then another layer of CSM
7. Drink Beer

Anyone have any thoughts?

I like the last item!:D

You are on the right track my friend. Take some pictures for other people to learn from.

Sounds like you are on the right track.
If you are using poly resin, you should use a layer of CSM under your layer of roving in step 6, or use biax with the CSM included, like 1708. Woven roving is not flat enough to bond well to the old fiberglass by itself if you use poly so the CSM fills in the gaps making a better bond.

I've got to admit you've got it all backwards

7. Drink Beer
1. Two pieces of 3/4 inch AC plywood
2. Bond together with PL adhesive
3. Apply resin to all surfaces and allow to dry
4. Sand and apply CSM and resin both front and back
5. Glue new Transom to the hull with PL adhesive

7. Drink Beer

always start with a beer, softness the blow when you find more things wrong ;)

Re: It's transom rebuilding time

hi

step three is incorrect.
do not allow the resin to harden.

apply the resin...let it soak into the wood...wait till its tacky.....then apply the csm. with a fresh layer of resin....(no wax)

you might want to glass the two pieces of wood togeather instead of gluing them. but that isnt major.

the reason for not letting the resin cure before applying the csm is that resin it self is brittle.....very brittle.......the csm will ride on a weak surface and have no actual good bond with the wood.

but the rest looks good.

in the hull extension thread there is a detailed explanation with pics of a transom build/installation.

and the beer is manditory....:D

cheers
