well as u may know ive been fixing up my neighbors 35hp 1959 johnson. i got the flywheeel pulled recently and reaplced everything under there. well when i open up one of the points i noticed that they were all bent up( the part where u screw in all the wires.) well i took it and used the newer points and the old points and installed that in. cleaned it off with the paper that came with the points and hoped for the best. ok i slapped the flywheel on and took me a rope with a know at the end and wrapped it aorund the flywheel. spun it and got amazing spark( the top cylinder the one with brand points) then checked the bottom cylinder no spark.

my thought is i need 400-600 grit sand paper and to clean off the points. i got them adjusted to .020

what u guys think is my problem? i diconnnected both kill swith wires from the vacum and quick connect. still no spark. so i elimnated an kill switch wire problem?

any thoughts

Re: its sparking

are you sure the old points are good? did you replace the coils? did you make sure the pin in the coil is in the center of the spark plug wire? did you replace the plug wires?

Re: its sparking

take them back. don't mess with them or they will not exchange. did you have to put the plugs wire together, the end on the wire?

Re: its sparking

you got the good ones. sierra has some you have to put the spring and boot on the spark plug end, if not done right they don't work.

Re: its sparking

get a cheap oms meter and check contenuity in prim and secondary coil
then buy a cheap spark plug tester.

don't mix and mactch points install new ones no sand paper is needed

check high tension lead wire's might be a bad connection if they are origanall

That's right, just make sure you stabbed it in the heart! (hit the copper core with the spring barb)
Hurry up, I'm ready for some running pics!

Re: its sparking

ok fix the spark problem today. the points werent the problem. i fixed the broken point though. well what happened was that the green wire on the coil was cut a little on the insulation exposing the wire. whihc shorted out very quickly. so therefore i put some electrical tape on it and tested it out. sparked like fury. both cylinders good blue white hot spark.

welll 2moro or hopely sometime this week im gonna get the flywheel torqued down to 70 pounds foot. im sure this si right?

and the guy siad he will get a regristration and drain plug as soon as possible.

then i can go downt he lake at 25-30 mphs with a 10dia 12 pitch prop :D

Re: its sparking

:eek:ok i got it running after fixing the spark. i torqued the flywheel to 70 pounds and started her up. ran like a dream. of course i got some things to do on it. might take a look at the fuel pump again. and i will be adjusting the needles.

so ya this outboard i might use sythetic mainly cuase it smokes quite a bit more then my other ten horse. but of course keep with 24-1 fuel and oil mix. 2moro the guy is gonna try to get a new drain plug and maybe get a title or what ever its called. but i might as well do a decarb while i adjust the needles.

any ideas? advice wish me luck. oh wednesday is hopely the day to do it cause i get out of school early and i will try to clean the boat up this tuesday

the wind sheild lol is like real dirty not even light goes through it lol

Re: its sparking

the reason i torqued it to 70 pounds cause my wrench has a plus or minus value of 4 pounds. so therefore i put it to 70 pounds just the be on the safe side. but its all good.
