Re: It won't die!!!

Pilty, over the years many have been told that something cannot be done and gone ahead anyway.

A few succeeded but many many more failed.

If you refuse to hear "no" then don't ask and don't insult the messenger.

If you are ingenious and creative enough you can do it but I believe that you will run out of will and resources short of success..

If you try it I wish you luck.

Re: It won't die!!!

I'm not stupid enough to P in the wind so I'll read all the comments again and consider my options again. The boat is my baby and I'm determined to get her afloat. Look at her on the site! She's all I have and I HAVE to get afloat. I'm an addict after all. Please help me get afloat if you have a wreck I can rebuild.

Centre Alabama boat needer.

Pitty.. first..( and i looked at your web page twice ) you never say what year and model...

you should be more thinking on how to get rid of that old Loran C and all the other out of date wireing then how to put a jeep CJ7 4.0L with trans into that thing...

Now I understand that Ford told his techs to make a V8 unicast for his motor..they said nope..cant be done..he said yup..do it..and they did..So I understand the "can" mentality. but your talking about physics.. "Cant" is a viable option here..

Unless your looking for some advice to build a boat for a program called "Junkyard Wars" then your are completely out of your scull to even try it.

dont have enough cash to find some POS boat with an antiquated 65 Johnson in descent runs ? look some more.. spend time on sound..not dreams m8

You would have to put in mod stringer system just for the torque your 4.0 would create in your hull..( which its not designed for atm ) you would have to do what these fine folks told you about ( venting..carb arrestors, not to mention on how you should determine your COG )

You would be wasting your time..and ATM I think your wasting ours..

But if you should persist..GL m8.

Peace YD

After reading the posts again I admit defeat. I may end up with the life jacket and paddle but, piecing out the motor is a start. Maybe if I piece out the Jeep too I'll be able to get a motor that runs. Anyone want to male an offer on the Johnson 65?

Glad to hear that you are persueing other options. I am in the process of rebuilding a boat, and one particular area of concern is liability. Sure we buy insurance, but I would hate to see a problem arise that was caused by using non-marinized parts (automotive), i.e. a fire. I think you are much better off buying a used outboard. We are using these things on the water in an enclosed environment and everything must meet the marine requirements to cover your butt.

Good luck!!

Huh.... so the lessons here are....

No one recommends putting that jeep motor in the boat as a good idea....

I would part out the jeep parts and fix the outboard......

If you decide to turn the jeep into a boat.... :) the possibility of the Coast Guard picking you up and sending you back to Cuba........... :^

Go with fixing or replacing the outboard...... part out the jeep on ebay.

Sorry it's taken so long for me to reply. Ended up in hospital (Lung infection but I'm fine now).

The jeep will be parted out and, hopefully, the outboard will be restored to operation. I've cut out most of the old floor. Hull looks to be in pretty good shape. There is a small crack on the internal transom that makes me think that the sandwiched board there is going to be replaced also.

It's turned out that the boat needs more work to it than I expected but, I'm not disheartened and will plug away at the work as time allows.

Thanks for all the help guys.

WOW......

Rule #1 in boating ....... Stay Healthy

Sorry to hear about the hospital stay. I would shop around and do the restoration at a slow pace. Parting out the jeep is being done at the right time and just in time to fix the outboard.

Sounds like things can only get better from here!

Not such a big deal. Just a lot of time and work. Find an old v-drive and make an adapter plate. Forget the stock water pump it's just a recirculating pump. You need a self priming pump and an under water pickup. I don't think dry stacks are legal anymore, but you might be able to adapt a water cooled manifold off a Chevy. Could be a great project if done right. Good luck.

Re: It won't die!!!

My recommendation is to get a service manual for the motor you have, and fix it. That will most likely be the most cost effective way to get back on the water. Ebay is you friend. You will most liekly find the powerpack or whatever you need on Ebay.

I am the last one to discourage modification, but the Jeep motor idea was not going to work. For the size of the boat, the Jeep drivetrain would have eaten up the majority of the boats weight carrying ability, making it unlikely that you would have been able to carry anything else in the boat. Boats can only hold so much weight.

Anyway, good luck with the project...
