Pointers movie review.:%

Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead mans chest.

It's been pushing 100 degrees this weekend and I needed to cool off so off to the movies we went.

First off, this is a very good movie. With that said I would encourage anyone who is contemplating going to see this movie to view the first installment of the franchise; Pirates of the Caribbean, legend of the black pearl. If you don't, you will most likely not understand much of the subtle humor that is tossed in all over this movie.

Having got that out of the way there are a couple of things that were unfortunate regarding how the story was written. For some reason, every character, and I mean every character, from the first movie is in this one. Then throw in a bunch of new characters and the story becomes disjointed with a bunch of meaningless, dead end subplots whose only purpose seems to be to make this a relatively long picture. The photography is beautiful, and the special effects are IMHO first rate, but are so overused, that some of the newer characters just are not believable. And every characters role changes from good guy to bad guy in every other scene. Alliances of good guy vs. bad guy are constantly blurred, and reshuffled every 10 minutes or so adding to the confusing nature of what is an overly confusing story line. Heaven forbid they carry all the characters from this movie to the next installment, the movie will have to be hrs long. And it leaves you with so many open ended story lines, that I cringe to think how the next installment will go.

The whimsical nature of the first movie is somehow lost on this one. It is a darker plot, the characters nature is so undefined that you dint' really know who to cheer for, and leaves you wanting for a true hero. I still dint' know who it is they wanted us to root for. I think that if they had taken the Indiana Jones approach, using just core character (s) and introducing new villains and climaxing with a definitive ending, the franchise would be better served in the long run.

But with all that said, the movie is very entertaining, well acted, beautifully shot, with a Tour-de-Force -- of special effects which should strike a chord on some level with just about any movie aficionado. A little violent for small children, but only in so far as visual, not content. But any movie with this much footage on boats and around water should grab everyone here enough to go see. Get the big bag of popcorn, as this is a long movie.

I would have to say if they had remained true to the tone of the first movie as opposed to true to the characters, this could have been a great one. As it is, it is just a very good one. Go see it, and let us know your thoughts.

Saw the first one and this one and i liked them both, its a movie that will reap many hundreds of millions of dollars for Disney, the series of cartoons and childrens books to follow have not yet begun.

I won't watch any movie with Johnny Depp.

He's denounced the USA (except the dollar) and deems it OK to give his childred marijuana.

There are many people which i happen to be one of, who have immigrated to America and in acquiring citizenship here, they have forsaken the citizenship of their home countries, likewise there are very many Americans who have seeked and have indeed acquired the citizenship of foreign countries. Johnny Depp just happens to be famous, thats all there is to it.

Saw it yesterday, and I agree with Pointer on many levels.

It is a very well shot movie. The photography and special effects are awesome IMO. Characters from the original are over-used, and the plot is definitely much darker than The Black Pearl. I also agree many of the subtle humor attempts will be missed if you haven't seen the Black Pearl.

While both movies are fictional, I found the current one to be much less believable. Some stunt scenes were over the top and just laughable IMO.

All in all, a great movie nonetheless. I'll have to buy it when the DVD comes out.

Two thumbs up. I was afraid it would not be as good as first. But it is an outstanding moviei, especially seeing as it is a sequel.

Can't wait for the last installment.

BTW, how do you sink an entire pirate ship, masts and all just a few feet off shore? Didn't they hit bottom first? LOL!

I didn't care for the ending so much. I think it needed to be more of an ending, and not so much of a go watch the third movie to find out what happens.

I'm cheap, I'll wait for the DVD like I do on all movies. I'm really interested in seeing this one for sure. Thanks for the heads up!

If you watch the first one to the very end, past the credits, you'll see the monkey steal one of the coins again.

I went and saw the movie 2 nights ago. It wasn't as good as the first, but was still a winner in my book. They could've done without Captain Jacks little pole vault stunt and the giant wood wheel though. The ending was great too. Can't wait for the 3rd installment!
