Regular primer that matches your paint. Only bare aluminum needs etching primer.

Thank you, I just wanted to be clear. I'll zinc chromate the bare aluminum, then matching primer and paint over everything.

For anyone interested, I sanded 400 to 600 to 800, then I hit it with Dakota aluminum brightener to "white" it out.
It's expensive stuff, but man does it work well! Just spray it on, wait 2 mins then rinse it off with the pressure washer.

The bottom I just swirled with a nylon cup brush. I think it looks cool, the admiral thinks it looks cool, so i guess it's going to stay that way.

I don't know, I figured I'd let it oxidize and grey, then hit it again with the Dakota when the time comes.
I went to Napa to get some aluminum cleaner and the guy sold me on this stuff. I have plenty left, it came in a 2.5 gallon jug I used about half of it.

This the stuff hayko?
Nope, its this stuff

http://www.dakotaproductsofcanada.com/trailer.html

I used the cleaner for unpolished aluminum. The Admiral wanted a dull satin finish rather than the high shine. Which is fine by me, I just wish I would have decided before I spent the money on polishing supplies LOL... oh well, I have them now, maybe for a future project.
They also have a cleaner that's safe for polished aluminum.

Those or some nice straight lines you taped off.. Going to look great..
The new shoes look good on the trailer..
Some trailers use wood to close it up.. I used some aluminum on mine..

Thanks Decker, ideally I'd like to find some puck board to close them up, I'd also like to use it to replace the plywood pad that goes under the motor on the outside of the transom. But I can get small sheets of aluminum or even diamond plate locally that I may use instead.
