I need to replace the trim cylinder o-ring, and was wondering Where can I get the tool to remove the trim cylinder end cap on my 115etl78c?? It almost looks like it could take the tool that one changes discs on a grinder with?

Thanks

Im not sure if you can get it, il be interested to hear if you can. Yes those grinder tools would work if the holes match.
You could make one with bolt ends as the pins.
The lid is aluminium and i think the housing is too, but whatever they a they can lock up together quite a bit. Some people heat them up a lot to weaken that seizing together and then undo it while its hot.
Its best to replace the seal/bushing that the shaft runs through the lid too as i find these go a lot so saves doing it another time

The special tools are listed in the manual with the factory part number. They can be ordered from any dealer.

My theory has always been if you want to work on something, get the proper tools. Other wise take it to somebody that has them.

Gee, I have used a deck plate key, and when I lost that, I made a tool out of bolts and two pieces of angle iron. Pretty simple to make one...

measure the diameter of the holes then go to McMaster-Carr and search for "adjustable face pin spanner wrench". Pick the adjustable wrench with correct size pins. McMaster will sell you a new armstrong for about same price as you can find used on ebay. If you need instant gratification, then go to sears. Sears used to stock the Armstrong wrenches for $20-$30. Use heat to soften the seals and the cap should come out with only minor application of mallet.

You do not want to use a lawnmower or grinder tool. They are basically a stamped piece of sheet metal with a couple of heavy duty pop rivets. They will flex before getting enough torque to remove cap. You will end up with wallowed out holes and the trim cap still stuck in cylinder. Yes, I know, you're thinking that you might be able to use a bench vice and grab the edges. No, not really. About half the time you bend the cylinder and get to buy a whole new $1200 trim system.

a used ebay tool. . I'm guessing 1978 trim cap should be 1/4".

I bought the special tool for punching shift rod bushing out, after about 3 uses it was bent all to hell and useless, I now use a spade drill bit a deep well socket and extension, works very well always. often I have found that making a tool better than what is called for really does make it a ""special tool"" "-)
