Well, I guess it's important to have people with logical thinking skills, help with your boat restoration. If they are equipt with tose skills, this is what you get.........

Yes, that is a 4"x3" hole cut into the bottom of my hull. The carpet & wood seen in the hole is the trailer.

Any way to fix it?????

Yes it is repairable but it will take some time and patients. Is there wood inside the chunk cut out?

No, just fiberglass, about 3/8" thick.

Not a difficult repair, plenty of information on here about that, but I have to ask why was this hole cut to begin with?

Well that piece is going to be part of the repair Hopefully Yacht Dr will chime in on this. it is going to take some grinding and many layer's of glass both inside and outside.

I will not ask the HOW or WHY since that will not help the damage

You can pretty much repair just about anything made of fiberglass, the key though, is time, have a patient attitude about it and learn all you can on how to properly do the repair, then be willing to purchase the proper materials.

So yes, it is repairable, and there is plenty of information on here about the proper method and what materials to use.

Why did you cut that out ?..

It has to be repaired inside and out .

I would grind and glass the Outside first..then glass the inside ( all done in One day )..

fill/fair your outside when its cured off..

Sorry it took so long to respond, but here we go, the whole story..... Last Sunday 3-20-11, I was cutting out the deck to repair the soft spots. I asked the person helping me to get to bottom of the boat to see if the foam was wet & ck the stringers. When I finished what I was I doing I went to ck on him & this is what I found. :-0 I guess he thought there was something under there & there was "My f'n trailer". Well, now I have a reason to learn how to patch the hull. Just in case something STUPID happens. LOL

Only diff is you should be able to utilize the piece that was cut out. Feather the edges all the way around on the piece then place it in the hole. Use the same technique as shown in the video with the Gelcoat and the mat, cloth, roven and resin. Couple of hours and she'll be good as new. Hardly noticeable.

The video is fine and just the proper way to repair, but (sorry Wood) I would not try to use the old piece back. It would be tuff to fill the thin gap between the old part and the hull (width of the saw blade all the way around) and acheive a good bond there. Plus as the video stated you need to taper down the area around the patch, but when you place the old piece back in now you have a hump, unless you thin down the piece that was cut out and that wouldn't make much sense.

Actually ( NO offence to Anyone ) that is NOT the proper way. It may be fine..but not proper.

Funny thing is about a year and a half ago I posted on Youtube (that vid) saying basically just that... It now has been removed LOL.

Grind and feather from the inside..screw some formica on the outside..glass the inside..remove the formica ..grind and bevel "seam" on the outside..glass outside..fair..

This will take more then a few Hours IMO..

You'll be faring and filling some outside either way.

I never set a time for the repair......

I've repaired several holes this way with no problem. Yep I'm questioning the pros.

Plastic does not shape very well over larger holes. Ive used regular masking tape and a few tongue depressors for holes like they showed in that Vid LOL..

Ok I'll go with that, but that's why you use something heavier over the plastic, the plastic is just to prevent sticking. Never made a video, but I've patched plenty of holes. Of course there is always more than one way to skin a boat.

By looking at the video what he did to the backside is what I would to the gelcoat side on an area of the boat that has no access from the backside, then I would do my fairing and gelcoat or paint.

In principal what he did was ok...my idea of the plastic was to give everything a backing.I would have used something heavier so it will not have a chance to bulge out on the finish side.Then you could be into a down to fiberglass when sanding out the gelcoat to make it look good. if you try to put fiberglass matt over a hole with no backing you will find it tends to create a void or bubble out..or if it bubbles into the hole the edge around the hole will bubble out.

I have seen me blow up ballons to form a shape from the backside if the area is too small to get into to put a backing in..then i would burst the ballon . If fiberglass does not have something to at least form to , it can be misaerable to work with.

Now with Chicken Joes repair I would go without using the original piece and do as Yacht Dr suggest as it will make for a stronger repair.

I find the thing with fiberglass is everyone has their own little tricks and I think it is great that everyone is sharing their tricks of the trade because myself I have been away from this stuff for years and am following alot of great people on this board before I decide what to do and what to use. I must say reading here is bringing back alot of memories.

Is he planning to remove the rest of the the bottom to fix the bunks?
