When I bought my boat last year, the coil had been damaged from pulling the cowling off the motor. The latch on the cowling cut the wire on top of the coil so the owner soldered it back together. The motor is a 79 Evinrude 85hp V4, model# 85999R.
I have seen where my buddy's much larger and much newer motor (96 Johnson 200hp) have a pinched wire and it created a voltage drop. This voltage drop or reistance in the wire from his powerpack caused his boat to only run 45-50mph and it's a 60mph boat. When he replaced the wire, he was back to 60mph.
So, should I replace the coil shown below? The wire is connected but it's exposed a little on the bottom of the solder and perhaps corroding a bit. The motor runs smooth so it's hard to tell if the damaged wire is doing it's job.
I've just changed props and I'm only getting 5,000rpm. Before I send the prop back to exchange it for another one, I want to make sure the motor is performing as it should. If a new coil will help, I need to know before changing props.
