is the temp sensor for the gauge the same as in a car??

I have a 86 searay which i'm installing a 350 vortec engine in. The temp sensor for the gauge won't fit in any of the coolant passages on the intake too big.

Ayuh,... Mine's in the T-Stat housing...

mine was in the intake manifold and the plug for the t-housing is too small
