Built the sheetmetal/structure cockpit of the md 88 in long beach a long time ago back in 86', QC was pretty good except for repair from the occasional UAW heroin addict screwups, lots oF AA planes.QUOTE]

20mph is boring thats why we go 35mph so when you hit the water it stings a little... Boy's will be Boy's but I will admit faster is better...

I dislocated my shoulder once at 35mph. I was on a slalom on a hard run to the starboard side, shoulder about 6" off the wave tops and lost it. Shoulder dug in and rolled me over several times before I stopped......but it was fun!

You're lucky you didn't drown, it's kind of hard to swim or tread water with an injury like that.

I was wearing my PFD and my wife was driving and watching me via the RVmirror. Didn't take her but a couple of minutes to be at my side.

35mph, now there was your mistake. I went down at 40 mph on the back of a Supra Beast and I skipped like a flat stone across the water .. LOL

I agree that 20-25 mph is cool for cruising, but there is something about knowin u have more throttle if I want it. I've not done much ski or tubing with my boat yet, but I know I always wish I had a little more throttle. I upgraded from a 85 Johnson to a 115 mercury top and still wish I had more top end. I know it's all in the design of my hull. It's built for ride not speed, but there's never enough. I'm already 5 hp over my max hp, but I'd love more speed at wot. I never run it long full throttle tho for fear of warring it out so I know what u r goin through. I think it comes down to how much of a toy it is. If u depend on it running every weekend for family entertainment u should take it easy, otherwise go have fun and deal with the consequences later.

On outboards my input is anecdotal at best...

I've grown up riding in bass boats and similar go fast boats with outboards...everyone I've ridden has been driven at WOT a good portion of there lives. My Mercury 200 2.4L will run right up to 6,200rpm for as long as I hold it there, since the rebuild, never had a problem. My buddy's 1998 Mariner 300 SuperMag only sees idle rpm's for a few minutes in the no wake zone, otherwise it runs 95% WOT (and is a blast).

I have no doubt mechanical things wear out and fail, but maintenance is 10x more important than how many hours at WOT. I'm not saying perfect maintenance = no failures, just that from my experience taking crappy care of your boat will get ya off the water sooner than hours at WOT.

I too like the excitement of tubing above 35mph..yes it hurts when you get tossed off...isn't that the point? One time I was sitting on the tube on the same buddy's Old Champion bass boat (Mariner 200XR4), it was strapped to the back fishing deck with bungee cords...we got up to 55mph, hit a wave and I launched off the cowling of the OB, hit the water and did no less that 4 somersaults...I miss those days!

Try barefooting. Bruises, concussions, torn muscles and all that jive. Good times.

Ok so my mechanic said it doesn't matter if you run it WOT or not.. He said these motors run better at WOT verses cruising.. He is a certified Sea Ray Mech.. 30yrs plus

Run better?
How so?
By using twice the gas to go the same distance?
And running twice as loud?
Fyi Sea ray doesn't make or use outboards...
And I can bet most of his customers are bringing him motors that died at wot.

Sea rays use chevy motors.
All internal parts are the same as a truck motor.
Would you expect your truck motor to last very long if you ran it constantly at 4500 -5000 rpm versus 2000-3500?
Then why would you expect your boat engine to last as long at those rpms especially since it is under constant heavy load.

Boat manufacturers know that most people only put less than 100 hours a year on their boats and at that rate will take 20 years to get to 1000 hours which is usually the point where you need to rebuild a boat engine if the motor hasn't died already. Long after the warranty has expired..

Trucks on the other hand will easily get to 5000 hours / 200,000 miles before needing a rebuild.

Why do you think this is?
Maybe because you're not redlining your truck with a full load uphill all its life perhaps?

Well I do have an outboard motor not a inboard .. And I'm pretty sure I've never seen a 2 stroke in a Chevy.

I do realize I said Sea Ray Mech.. My bad I Meant Mercury OutBoard motors.. He used to work at the Sea Ray Plant as a Mech. He specializes in the Outboard motors here in Mesa, Az and has for a long time.

Probably should have said I had a 2 stroke..

My 1991 75 HP mercury ran like crap until someone told me to run it WOT at least 15 minutes or so every few hrs. Now, it runs smooth and starts on the first turn of the key instead of the 2nd. I suggest everyone to try it out.
