Hi guys.

Just a quick question is it possible to replace part of the stringer on a fiber glass boat.

I have an old boat which stringers lie flat, where there is only a little bit of rot in a damaged section of the fiber glass covering.

Can I remove just the small bit. No more than 9 inches and make a sandwich section onto remaining stringer. Obviously then I would recoat in fiberglass.

I expect you to tell me this is a crazy idea, but it would make my life a lot easier to only do a small bit.

Thanks for any replies
Ps this isy first resto job so take it gently.

Yes it can be done very effectively. I would use a 10:1 scarf,

Re: Is it possible

I replaced about 18 inches of the main stringer section on my 24 foot boat.

Pictures of your situation would help visualize . . .

Here is a picture of the replacement joint that I did on my boat. The stringer is fairly deep (16 inches if I recall) so the mending joint did not have to be too long.

Post some pictures of what you got, that may help.

10:1 scarf means you make a cut in the wood - in an angle - so that you expose 10 times wood than the width of the wood. For example..

If the width of the above piece is 3/4, the cut (the gray area) should be 7.5 inch

Will hopefully get a pick up later. Although the stringer is not very thick. As it looks like the wood runs on its face. it's on an old boat.

Hi all a picture or 2 to help explain.

I think the damage/rot is from where the floor was attached to the stringers.

not very big but I will investigate how far it goes.

Thanks for any help/advice

Re: Is it possible

these run from the front to the back, hence me thinking they were stringers...

It is an old boat though.

Is the repair that I was hoping for ok for this then
