Re: Is it OK to put passenger car tires on a boat trailer?

OK...I will ask you. Do you have a link to the DOT regulations that state this?

http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regu.../fmcsrruletext.aspx?chunkkey=090163348008f29e

Look at s5.1.2 it says:

When a passenger car tire is installed on a multipurpose passenger vehicle, truck, bus, or trailer, the tire?s load rating shall be reduced by dividing by 1.10 before calculating the sum (i.e., the sum of the load ratings of the tires on each axle, when the tires? load carrying capacity at the recommended tire cold inflation pressure is reduced by dividing by 1.10, must be appropriate for the GAWR).

The section that you linked to is for vehicles with a GVWR of over 10,000 lbs.

?571.120 Tire selection and rims and motor home/recreation vehicle trailer load carrying capacity information for motor vehicles with a GVWR of more than 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds).

S1. Scope. This standard specifies tire and rim selection requirements, rim marking requirements and motor home/ recreation vehicle trailer load carrying capacity information.

OK then how about ?571.110 Tire selection and rims and motor home/recreation vehicle trailer load carrying capacity information for motor vehicles with a GVWR of 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) or less.

Paragraph S4.2.2.2 in the link below:

http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regu...nkKey=090163348008f296&keyword=tire selection

or in the following link from the Boat Trailer Manufacturer's Association:

http://www.trailermanufacturersassociation.org/currentissues/currentissues1.html

which says:

QUESTION:
Are passenger rated tires allowed on trailers? We get only ?ST? tires, but I still see many ?P? rated tires on trailers.

ANSWER:
Passenger tires are allowed on trailers; however the individual maximum load capacity of the tire must be reduced 10%. The total adjusted tire capacities on any axle must then be equal to or greater than the GAWR specified on the Certification/VIN label for that axle.
