Ok so here is my problem, a couple of weeks ago i went fishing and after a couple of hours of fishing my battery was dead. I pulled started to engine and noticed the volt gauge on my dash was only reading 10 volts even with the engine running wide open. My first thought was a bad battery. So today i bought a new battery and started the engine and still the volt gauge would only show 12 volts no charge. I should mention too that a couple of weeks ago my tach gauge was working fine running down the lake, when i slowed it to idel the tach went to zero back up to about 1500rpm, then fell to zero again and hasn,t worked since. So today after i replaced the battery i started checking things and so far this is what i have found.
1. With the engine running i checked the battery volts with a meter, it only read 12.6
2. With the engine running i took the postive side cable off the battery and the engine kept running with it disconneted.
3. I looked under the fly wheel at the stator and the magnets do not look burnt all the red coating is still very bright and clean, the stator does not appear to have damage from heat.(No melted goop)
4. I checked the resistance between the two yellow wires and it read within limits per the manual .5 oms i think is what it was.
5. I checked each yellow wire with the ground it showed no resistance meaning it was open i guess.
6. I noticed the connections on the two yellow wires were burnt black, and with all wires reconnected and the engine running the yellow wires got so hot that you could not touch them same thing with the regulatior it was getting very very hot so i shut the engine down.
My guess is the voltage regulator has gone bad, but i wanted a second opinion so maybe i will be able to cancel the order on this 180 dollar regulator if it's not whats causing the problems.
Any help would be great. Oh my engine is a 2001 mercury 3cyl 90 two stroke.
