I have a '92 Celebrity with a 7.4 merc- I just replaced the motor. While testing the new motor something happened. It sounded like something came apart while running wide open. The oil pressure never got below 40 and the temp never got above 150. If the upper case of lower unit locked up would the lower still work properly by shift in forward and reverse? It sounded like something came apart.

Wide open,huh
Pull the engine to see if the drive still turns.
Seriously, check the oil in the motor and the drive. Remove the drive and test the motor.
