Re: Intex Mariner 4 modifications and Tips

MrDr: I am very pleased with the way my floor is working without the slats. For perspective though, I only occasionally stand in mine, usually only to get in & out and to stretch. The floor is 15/32", and is in 3 separate pieces, from the back, 4', 4' and 1' in length. There is absolutely nothing connecting them, so stepping near a 'joint' will give you something similar to the slat floor in that what you are standing on moves differently than the adjoining floor. This has not really been an issue though. I have my central work area over the main split in the floor. I do have a simple idea to stabilize this should it ever become an issue though. It involves the cinch straps that I still use to hold my seats to the floor, even though they are now on pedestals. The real plus is that except for the small cone piece, I can make one trip and carry both main floor sections to the boat or into the garage, the weight and size are that convenient.

Copper, I'm going out on Sunday and i think I'm going to try it. My floor is two pieces with no connection. If I'm alone in the boat i believe i would only need to step up to the front half and there will be no issues. Thanks for the info!

Ok...gotcha...click on my video link on this page. Then look for my other videos....i had an intex excursion, i used 1" pvc under the custom hard floor on that boat. Not necessary on the mariner. I have several excursion videos on you tube

I actually watched your videos many times, one of the reasons I decided to do this. I just couldn't really figure out exactly how you did it. Did you create a rack by joining them together or did you just lay them under? I didn't see a video in which you actually lifted the floor to expose the PVC.
Thanks

mrdrh99,

I dont have a circuit breaker, is it really necessay?

I've seen many videos of people not using the breaker, however, just think about what could happen without it. Do you really want to be out in the middle of the lake with either of two things: 1) a motor that is fried and useless 2) a fire on an inflatable boat? That's one thing I wouldn't try to cheap out on. My thought, for what you pay for a breaker you can damn near get the minn kota power center like I did, it has the breakers that are strong enough for up to a 80# trolling motor and also two accessory plugs, with a breaker for them. I use the accessory plug and my car navigation dock on the boat and I have gps/maps/speedometer (even though I only get 3/4mph tops), plus music for when the fish quit biting and I'm just kicking back!

Hey bud, those are 1" sticks cut to length just laying in the grooves of the inflated floor. I just duct taped the ends to eliminate any edges and layed 4 of them in there. I used 10' pieces and had to trim a bit off the two on the sides of the boat. My floor was 2 pieces. My experience with the floor in that boat: from front to back it was fine, but I could never eliminate the side to side rocking going on. It seemed fine while was sitting down but was very iffy standing up and moving around. I have none of these issues in my Mariner 4!

Just saw the pics you had....I really like the way you managed to strap down the seat and base as opposed to bolting it through. I may have to look into that as I'm currently looking for ways to cut down on weight/bulk in transporting the boat. I am also thinking about moving my fish finder/music player to that back storage area and getting it out of the middle of the floor since I'm already thinking about trout season! I'll need as much room in the center of the boat as possible to stand and cast my fly rods. Several times now I have passed on taking it out simply because I didn't feel like lugging everything around and setting it up. I'm beginning to think that just for myself I may have over modded it but I absolutely love my boat!!!

So....Copper....took the boat out today without the slats. I must say it's different but not undoable. There is an awful lot of side to side movement, so much so that standing wasn't an option (which you did warn me about). The positive was transportation was a cinch! I may ditch the floor on non fly fishing trips and keep it for the full day or fly trips.

Hey mrdrh99, Copper, just a thought: is it possible that the side to side movement you are experiencing (with just the custom floors) is due to the keel being inflated? I wonder if there would be less of this movement if the keel were to be left deflated...
btw, thanks for the many tips, pics, and vids guys!!

Re: Intex Mariner 4 modifications and Tips

Here is what I did I took plastic milk crates and 3/4 inch plywood I set the crate down on the plywood measured out 5 or 6 inches on all sides enough to keep you from tipping over cut that out and drilled sanded and counter sunk holes in plywood bolted bottom of crate to the plywood next I took a 1 by 12 pine board and cut it to fit inside of the crate and then I cut another piece of 1 by 12 that matched the width of a regular bass boat seat kind that you mount on top of a swivel and bolted seat and swivel to the boards that I cut out now the seat fits perfect on top of the crate and you have space to store stuff inside of milk crate plus they are very portable and they are easy to store one thing I gotta do is figure out way to bolt the seat rig to the crate with a hinge that you can take apart to store because the seat want s to tip up if you lean to far forward other than that they work perfect. I will post pics if you want them .

Did I see your seats in a video on youtube?

"...you mount two wheels on the transom. They can push the boat into the water and once on the water, they can easily flip the wheels up and go."

This is def. the direction I want to pursue. I will share anything I figure out.

I WISH. Looking high and low I paid $249 + tax for a total of $268 last night at 11 pm.
I suppose it is because I bought it in July. Motorcycles and Boats vary in price like lobster... I guess that seasonal pricing applies to inflatable boats also. On the bright side, I did get the 2008 model ( I just like the yellow better ).
It says it will be here on Friday. I am super stoked. My budget means I will be starting out stock and slowly modding as $ permits. I am interested in wheels more than anything, because where I live its a few hundred feet to the water at each lake.
I saw all your youtube video's; that's what brought me here ( you mentioned iboats on one of them ) Nice boat, man.

Re: Intex Mariner 4 modifications and Tips

MrDr: I've not really experienced any side to side wobbling or instability, but then again I have never considered not inflating the keel. The way I see it, there is a little more material in the bottom of the boat than is needed to cover the bottom. When you inflate the keel, on land it gives the bottom of the boat a 'V' shape. When you put the boat in the water with any weight in it, the keel tube is pressed upward by the pressure of the water, doing 2 things: 1. The bottom of the boat becomes flat, conforming to the hard floor, be it slat or smooth ply, with the keel forming a ridge down the center of the boat (this intentionally takes up any slack material in the floor); 2. The water pressure pins the hard floor, between the bottom of the boat and the inflated side tubes of the boat. I can easily imagine that without the keel inflated, stepping on one side of the hard floor would cause it to move down into the extra material that is the bottom of the boat, creating a very unstable hard bottom.

I think if you'd give it a go again, with the keel fully inflated, you'll find the plywood-only floor much more stable.

One more thing re: the circuit breaker talk earlier. The other day I saw a 50 amp circuit breaker in the boating section at Walmart for under $10. I have to confess, that though one is recommended, I have not installed one to date, largely because I can't understand how one would become necessary. Thoughts?

Re: Intex Mariner 4 modifications and Tips

WOW,, So I have been without the internet for a while.
I check back here to see SO many of you in this thread making mods for your Mariner 4's !
Lots of Great Stuff guys, and I'm Shocked to see 10 pages of posts !

My Mariner 4 is still going strong, I'm half way through my 3rd season with it.
I have been rotating between my custom hard floor and the original slat floor.
The slat floor is nice for a quick outing in the evening since it can fold up in the boat, but if I'm going out for a day on the water, I still rock the custom hard floor.

I am truly blown away by so many people here doing mods ! Sorry if you sent me PM and I never got back to you, since I was away.

Cheers to all the builds on here !

Sincerely Desode

Re: Intex Mariner 4 modifications and Tips

Copper, from what I have read, usually there will be no issues, only once either a battery starts to go bad or/mainly if water were to get to the terminals. I haven't done much research, I knew from the get go I wanted the minn kota battery box and it happens to have two in it. I'm not positive but I believe the warranty will be voided if something happens to the motor and there isn't one being used. I've seen a bunch of youtube vids with guys not using one so I don't think its a huge deal.

Also, good point on the keel, I'll give it a try next time I'm out and get back to you.

Re: Intex Mariner 4 modifications and Tips

hey fellow mariner 4 owners just got mine last week and love it. I want to put in the plywood floor everyone has been talking about here, but I noticed that some have said that the measurement is 27 inches for the width of the boards. The boards that i cut are basically the same shape and width of the plank insert and also the bottom of the boat which is 34 inches wide. Should it be shorter than the width of the planks? i'm basially trying to do copper's design 3 pieces no joints or hinges and no plank on the floor. Thanks sorry it sounds so newb but I'm a little baffled lol
