I am in the process of installing a rebuilt powerhead on a 1998 evinrude 115. It has been an educational experience and now I see why boat repair shop said it would cost too much. Lots of things get stuck. I am currently stuck on the steering connection at the base of the powerhead. There is a connection at the forward base of the powerhead where two bolts screw into a connector with rubber for isolation. I have to get this piece out so I can transfer it to the new powerhead. I removed the single screw that holds it in place but now I can't get the unit to come out of the old powerhead. Any suggestions for how to get it loose?

Any chance you could post a picture, I can't seem to visualize what you are talking about.

Re: installing rebuilt powerhead and steering connection stuck

I added two images, at slightly different distances. All three bolts are present, and backed out so that they are visible. The center bolt screws into the powerhead. The two outer bolts go through the steering bracket and then into metal sleeves which are housed in rubber tubes. The two outer bolts are the connection between the motor and the steering system. Thanks in advance for any help. I can't even find this part in my Seloc manual or in online parts suppliers.

That is the upper mount.
The center bolt you have loose needs
to be removed, then the center
wedge comes out then pry out
the mounts.
If your installing reman powerhead,
and replacing the upper mount
with a new one maybe you don't need
to worry about the old one ?
It does look kind of rough.

Re: installing rebuilt powerhead and steering connection stuck

Thanks!!!! Armed with this information I was able to confirm. I have not purchased a new one (at least not yet), as I did not know that I might need one. At this point I am hoping to re-use the old one as I would prefer not to spend any more money and because I am burning vacation time working on the motor instead of fishing. Any tricks to prying the center part out?

Big punch down the center and hammer
it side to side, should loosen it up.
Then hit the mounts toward the center
of the motor, that should loosen them.

I myself would not reuse them or install them in a customers engine at their request, replace them is my $.02 ....

Faztbullet convinced me that I should replace the engine mount. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find one. Iboats doesn't have them and none of about 7 online sources seem to have them. Any suggestions on where I can buy the engine mount???

Thanks

Re: installing rebuilt powerhead and steering connection stuck

Thanks for all your help. You folks have identified my problem with the upper motor mount. I eventually found a vendor and have ordered a replacement.

While waiting for the replacement I have reassembled the motor, except for bolting the powerhead to the rest of the outboard. On pins and needles waiting for the mount so I can try it out.

Thanks again!

Re: installing rebuilt powerhead and steering connection stuck

Thanks to all these posters. I'm removing a powerhead right now from 1998 Evinrude 150, FFI, and baffled with the two steering arm bolts set in rubber. From this post I see there is a third bolt, in the centre that releases the two other bolts. This procedure overlooked in the Seloc manual. But when you get to the install portion, all of a sudden Seloc wants you to torque these two bolts to 100 lb! Magic torquing bolts you never removed. Anyways, armed with this tomorrow I hope to have joy releasing these bolts. Thanks

Re: installing rebuilt powerhead and steering connection stuck

charris,
I found this forum to be incredibly helpful. If it isn't obvious from the string of messages, I got stuck repeatedly and each time I got stuck some very helpful person participating in this forum would help me get unstuck. I learned a lot in the process, but the next time I have a seized motor, I might not repeat it. It turned into a LOT of work. I still have the photos that I took so let me know if any of the photos might be helpful to you. My only lingering problem with the rebuild is that the engine occasionally stalls at idle and when accelerating out of idle. I think I still have a partially clogged low-speed carburater jet, but it hasn't bothered me enough to be worth the trouble of pulling and cleaning the four carbs.

Good luck!

Thanks Daviss - yeah seems like a lot of folks have been there before. I finally gave up trying to remove these two bolts. They came out a bit and then the whole rubber and metal mount starting turning, could turn forever and they don't screw out. Got the centre bolt out, looks like screwing it in wedges the two mounts into place but even with the bolt out I couldn't budge anything. So took an angle grinder and cut through the bolts and now the powerhead is freee. My replacement powerhead has good rubber mounts so I just have to order a couple of the correct bolts and I'll be OK. Boy this looked like a sweet job, all the bolts came out just fine and I have a complete powerhead, simple re and re but these 2 bolts put an end to that. Hope the rest goes OK. The powerhead I'm putting on is a year 2000, a few differences but hopefully nothing that won't mate up ok like fuel and electrical. Thanks for your input. When I'm done I'm gonna look at those bloody mounts and see just why they weren't coming out.
