Installing a new impeller.

Im about to buy a new impeller in my outboard. While I have the lower unit off is there anything else I should replace while I have it off?

Nothing outside of the waterpump parts usually needs to be replaced, if the gearcase does not allow water to leak in.

When you replace the impeller, replace both wearplate gaskets, the wearplate and the slinger. Inspect the upper water pump and see that the stainless liner is not pitted or scratched. You may want to replace the waterpump base gasket and oring, if it has been a while.

Thanks for the advice. I went ahead and ordered the whole kit instead of just the impeller.

I got my kit in the mail and started the repair. Soon as I drained the lower unit oil it came out solid gray. Im going to take the lower unit off here in a few mins after I let it drain. The lower unit fluid I have to fill it back up with looks more like motor oil. What would cause the fluid to turn grey? Chris1956 suggested that maybe I could have water getting into there? If so would I need to order another gasket kit for the rest of the lower unit?

I just realized now that draining the lower unit isn't necessary to change the impeller but Im sure it was over due for a change any ways....

It looks like you have water getting in somewhere. You may want to order a lower end seal kit. I had a shaft seal go on me a few years back.

How much debris was on the drain plug magnet? Grey oil is sometimes a sign of components failing in the lower unit.

I had murky oil in a motor I bought last year and thought the seals were shot but read on the site to try a new gasket on the drain and fill screws so i did that first........was lucky and never had water again......you may be so lucky as me and a one dollar fix may work before changing your seals!

Lower unit oil should be changed yearly. Luckily mine was the same thing as fisherguy. Besides the drain and fill screws water can get in through the prop shaft seals and the crankshaft seals under the waterpump. You can refill it and keep an eye on it or do a pressure test.

There was hardly any metal on the magnetic screw at all. The drain and vent screw gaskets pretty much fell apart when I took the screws off. Ill have to get some new ones and just keep an eye on it. Thanks for the tips.
