Can anyone help me get started on how to inspect an impeller on a 1987 Force 125hp motor?
I'm nervous about reattaching linkages or whatever when I reassemble.

I cant help with the install or putting the lower unit back on but I recommend to forget the inspection and just replace the impeller. A bad impeller can look like a good impeller. They only cost around 20 bucks and with all the hassle of removing the lower unit and all you may as well replace it.

AMEN Captain! Totally agree!
You went to all the trouble of dropping the lower unit and removing the pump, may just as well put in a new impeller--Cheap insurance and peace of mind. Just be careful to get the drive key back in. They tend to rock and slip out of the groove on the shaft. SO: Put the pin in the groove with a little anti-seize if you have any, slide down the new impeller being sure not to displace the key, lubricate with soap or detergent (Oil deteriorates rubber), then lower the pump housing while turning the shaft in the proper direction (clockwise looking down) Goes on slicker n' snot.
