While everything these guys are saying is true, I'll tell you that I own an HP Officejet 5610 All-In-One, and I like it. In fact, I owned two of them, one was in my car, when I was self employed. No trouble with either of them.

Oh and as noted, with what ink costs, having Walgreens print your photos is less expensive. My wife does that almost exclusively now. (Bonus for me, I can see Walgreen from the window I am looking out of, right now! ;) )

I have a Samsung ML 3051-ND laser that I scored off of Ebay with stickers still on it and less than 500 sheets on the counter, all for $66 shipped. Only B&W, but it's networked to all the computers in the house.. I have a HP Officejet 4500 Desktop for image printing, scanning and faxing. A set of cartridges is more than I paid for the printer, but I buy the "XL" cartridges seperatly and they last a little longer for not much more, I'v had the printer a year and put 3 cartridges in it IIRC, not too bad but I don't need it much. I have put one $80 toner in the Laser in 3 years of ownership and thousands of pages

I would go for laser. Ink jet printers tend to have the ink dry up blocking the heads or passages. The very nice brother printer I have has clogged passages and is now useless.

We have an epson workforce 610 that we are really pleased with. Lov ethe wireless ability to move it where ever you want. We make a lot of use of the scanning and copying functions as well.

To save money on ink, we get them refilled at Costco. The software, drivers etc, is much better than the hp stuff as well..

Have a Workforce 610 as well. Wireless is real nice, even have an App to print from my Iphone.
When it works good, it works great. Same speed printing as a laser, good print quality.
What I don't like about it is the typical ink jet gripes. When it sits long periods, the ink in the print head cakes up, and I need to clean the nozzles several times before I can get the print quality back, thus wasting ink. OH... And they're awful proud of the ink too. Even the standard capacity cartridges are a decent amount of cake, but those go QUICK!!! The high capacity cartridges last a long time, but they're pretty darn expensive. Other problem is getting Epson cartridges. Not everybody carries the 68/97 high cap cartridges, where as almost everybody carries any cartridge for an HP or Lexmark.

Think that one will be the last Ink Jet I buy. Laser may be a big nugget up front to buy, but we all know toner lasts much longer in those, and there aren't any jets to clog up after sitting for long periods.

If you get a B/W laser, get one of the Brothers. I had one of the Samsungs and threw it in the trash after 6 months as it was jam city. Apparently, I am not the only one with the Samsungs having that issue according to the reviews..

Thanks for all the advice and thoughts everyone. I've been off this for a bit due to other things going on, but will follow up on all the suggestions. Really appreciated!

My ML-3051ND has not jammed once and I have printed out entire owners manuals with it. Every once in a while it grabs more than one sheet of thin paper, but it has never jammed. I have gotten my $66 worth over and over. I used to have to babysit a simmilar type HP that would jam all the time printing double sided liability forms. Printing 1000 copies, it might have gone 50 copies without jamming.

That's exactly what my Samsung would do and it jammed it every time. I use high quality heavy paper so maybe that is the issue. The 2 Brothers I bought handle the exact same paper easily.

If I use the heavier/ higher quality paper, it will not take more than one sheet at a time, only with the thin stuff. I normally run 20 weight Georgia Pacific paper.

Just a few days after posting how great my printer was, the print head started plugging up. I cleaned it and then it started to plug up again. Guess that'll teach me to give something a good review!
I jinxed you!

Too bad it's hard to tell which product will be reliable based on past reputation any more. But that's another topic entirely!

Used to be HP was the best brand, then Lexmark introduced $20 printers, so HP answered with $30 printers and the days of disposable printers began

I remember way back when, I bought a Lexmark Z22 for $22 on sale. It worked for a few months, then ran out of ink, and ink was more expensive than the more current model, so I upgraded for less.

I have found that if you actually go to a slightly more expensive laser printer, the toner cartridge is larger and the net cost of the printer and consumable is actually a better buy overall. Also, the printer drive mechanism seems to be more substantial.

My first inkjet was an HP and I loved it. It lasted a long time but finally died. That's when I got the Canon, that I had a love/hate relationship with from the beginning. Gradually over time, the scale tipped more toward hate. Its only redeeming quality was that it printed excellent photos.
