Looking to buy a used Yamaha 2 stroke in the 40 to 90 hp range from the 90’s and 2000’s and I have never owned one.Besides checking compression obvious signs of damage externally and hopefully running it first,is there anything else to look at on these that may be a issue to look out for?thanks

Generally bullet-proof motors….but look for one that was used in freshwater, as saltwater outboards can have their own set of issues….

Thanks. Been watching pricing and trying to figure that out right now.

I'll 2nd that freshwater comment. I bought a 96 15hp yamaha ran in saltwater. The bolts were corrosion welded into the block and I cracked the block trying to change the exhaust gaskets. Check all of the hardware for signs of corrosion, look for cracks in plastic parts, and a replace plugs, filters, impeller, foot oil, and clean the carbs when you get it. You never know how the last person actually maintained it.
