Re: Indonesia wants us out.

Mellow, you make some very sane, lucid, well thought out points. And you are probably closer to being right about the Indonesian Government than any of us will ever know.
You did make one point that I doubt is completely accurate:

"think of it this way, if our troops aren't
armed, there is no way for the radicals to
justify attacking them. if they were armed,
they could claim the us attacked them etc..."

I don't think they need to "justify" attacking us at all. They just do it, armed or not. (I don't remember much anti-aircraft fire from the employees in the Towers)

That's right. They don't need any stinking excuse, they just start killing.

My brother did not have a AK47 with him that day in the towers.

KaGee while I agree with your statement, what I meant to convey is that the critics believe we give this aid to keep them down. I don't believe that, I beleive we do it with noble intentions.

Here's a news flash!

I will continue to give to whomever is in need of humanitiarian aid-ANYWHERE. (Except certain parts of Kentucky where SBN lives). :D He has that covered. God Bless. :)

I will, however, choose carefully the agenecies that distribute that aid.

In my book, forget the following.

UNICEF-UN generated and run. (read limo's. etc, for fat cats). Can you read-"oil for food?"

Red Cross. Internationally, it is a money pit, US-OK!

The Muslim religion is growing faster than any religion on the planet. There's no stopping it. Its the extremism that needs to be dealt with, otherwise we're all doomed. Islam is second only to Christianity. Islam is forecast to surpass Christianity in the not so distant future.

If you want to use the dog bite analogy, we have no choice but to continue to try and train the dog.

Re: Indonesia wants us out.

i think indonesia has backed us on the war on terror. i think malaysia is the place with the real comfy muslim extremist hideouts & even high seas pirates of today... i think what's happening is the vacuum of local town leaders has led to a rush of extremists trying to sway the local sentiment. the indo gov has already been stressed with controlling what rebel groups that are out there. and now this is making them push some snap decisions to keep everything as smooth as possible, with the main focus on what calms their citizens. whom are mostly muslim. it sux to hear the christian citizens are afraid tho.

i still defer the best decisions for us - to be made by our leaders, concerning the situation. w.t.h. do we know, sitting over here on a comfy seat typing away?

Re: Indonesia wants us out.

the only thing that really bothers me, and i'm not sure what legalities are involved - is if i were a soldier, and told to go into this situation without a weapon, i'd be wondering how to get out of this assignment. i'd be more than happy to help other countries, but if i put on the uniform, i'd be feeling naked without the weapon that is a part of it. -just my 2c-

that would be something to think about for me...maybe they all oughta at least have a sidearm.

Aid should be aid. period. For them (or us) to politicise this, while the dead line thier streets is unaceptable to me. We help them any way we can, friend or foe. But as soon as the bullets start flying, which I have no doubt, they will, we leave.
I disagree with the assumption the the government is friendly. Thier government is friendly to our green, hence, the tourist trade. It wasn't that long ago, however, that an entire tour group was held hostage over there. Not exactly where I would vacation with the kids, if ya know what i mean.

If we had no troops in Indonesia, none of them would be fired upon.....Foreign Relief efforts should be funded & manned by private organizations, ie World Vision, et al....Not by the U.S. government & my tax dollars.....The Abraham Lincoln has no business being there.....We can send a boatload of money there, but **** & moan about helping out Katrina victims  PATHETIC!.....JK

You may think this is odd, but i couldn't agree with you more. Indonesia is just one more country ruled by warlords, and we should not be the world's police force.
If, out of the chaos that is the Indonesian government, steps a viable, self-reliant body, which provides BASIC security for it's populace, then we should help the people thru it's soverniegn government. If it ,(and other gang-governed cesspools around the globe) remains an anrchy, stay away from it like the plague it is.

Re: Indonesia wants us out.

This Indon policy is the same for all countries giving aid. Always has been.
We had an identical situation 12 mths back.
Their policy is to provide any protection required for foreign teams. Has worked sucessfully up till now.
Keep in mind the Indons have moved from pretty much a dictatorship to a democracy in around a handfull of years.
They do have a problem with a handfull of extremists and are probably more sucessful in this area than a lot of other similar countries.
I can understand their attitude.
If American servicemen come ashore here, for whatever reason, armed, I promise you, it would be the last time American Servicemen would ever come ashore. Bit over stated granted, but that's the way some of us think.
If the same was reversed to your Country, I would be surprised if you didn't hold similar views.
Indon is our neighbour, we have to live in peace with them....there is close to 300million of them....to 22 million of us, so personally I support their efforts to reform, especially in the direction they are moving.
Just my view.
We have a bit to do with Indon's.
They will again be one of the Asian Tigers.
Cheers
Phillip

Re: Indonesia wants us out.

If our soldiers are directed or ordered to go somewhere in uniform they should be armed...period. Soldiers are warriors and fighters and to take away their arms, for any reason is just wrong. If aid needs to be given and arms are for one reason or another deemed inapropriate, then soldiers should not be involved in the aid effort. You don't send a SWAT team to do crossing guard duty at the grade school. Don't send our military to hand out water and food....send in the red cross.
