Impeller ruined?

Greetings, earlier today, i made a stupid mistake. Went out to run my Johnson 15(as I havent started it in several months). I hooked up water and it fired right up, ran about 10 min. I then shut it down for a few minutes, put in stabil and started it up again but forgot to turn the water back on. Probably idled for a minute before i realized there was no water. Should I be worried about the impeller now? It was just recently replaced too.

There is no sense in ruining a perfectly running engine, at least look at the impellor. You might as well change it will you are in there.

Put the motor in a good amount of water, (like right about the lower mounts) and start it up. See how well it pumps water. If it pumps water good, then you're okay. If not, then I would say your impeller is toast.

If you had just run it there was still a small amount of water in it so I think you are alright but it woudln't be a bad idea to pop it apart and have a look then you can be sure.

As EN2 said, there is no sense risking the engine but I would bet you are okay.

Best not to gamble..... drop the lower unit, install another new impeller, and don't ever do that again!

Impellers are cheap. If you have not changed one before it's easy to do and there's lotsa help on this forum. Realistically it still works but you have shortened the life of it. So if you test it, it will probably still work. I'd consider changing it also as mentioned to be safe. Looking back every few minutes to check for water flow is kind off a pain after a while.

Water is the lubricant for the impeller, water also cools the LU while exhaust exits. Bet things got toasty warm down there. I'd get a new impeller just to be safe.

I appreciate all the replies. I'll get a new one on order. I'm always super cautious about it too, not even dry firing it for second. Live and learn. Thanks again.

Man, I'm having some terrible luck lately. I picked up a nonrunning 88 waverunner a couple days ago for a 100 bucks. Been around boats quite a bit, never skis. Well we've probably damaged that thing for running water before starting. Didn't do any research research before attempting to start. How stinkin ironic.

You probably didn't hurt a thing in your wave runner. They have metal lmpellers in the jet pump and that's where your mtr gets it's cooling from. The jet pump. I'm no expert but the few I've worked on have been that way.

Cool. I hope not. Waiting on a new coil, to hopefully get spark to the plugs again.

Also, is site slow for anyone else, or is just me?
