Impeller noise

I have a 1973 115 Johnson that I just started up (on the muffs) for the summer. Once the fogging oil burned up the motor seemed to run fine and was pumping water well. One thing I noticed was a sound coming from the lower end. I shut down the motor and turned the flywheel by hand and could here the noise was coming from the impeller. It sounds like the rubber is just making noise when rubbing up on the housing. I am just wondering if this is normal or should I be concerned there is something wrong? The impeller was replaced last year and I had the lower end off this spring and checked the impeller and it still looked new.

Thanks

Re: Impeller noise

if you could hear something, with the engine running on muffs, other than exhaust noise.....it had to be quite loud and worthy of investigation.

Re: Impeller noise

with the engine running it is very faint noise (probably just hard to hear over the exhaust). When I turn the flywheel by hand you can hear that it is coming from the impeller. Its hard to describe the sound. I pulled off the water hoses that come off the heads and plenty of water was coming out. I will pull the lower end off again and investigate. I know that it isn't the gears because I spun the driveshaft by hand before I placed that impeller back on the shaft and there was no noise there. The lower end was pressure tested and refilled this spring.

Re: Impeller noise

Put it in the lake once and see if you still hear it. Running on muffs is not very accurate for any kind of trouble shooting. After you pull it out of the lake see if you still hear the same noise.
