Impeller was used for many , many years and many models.-----Your local boat shop will have a good one in stock !!

With any new to you boat, do all the maintenance that the prior owner didn't do.

Iboats sells impellers and pump kits and any other maintenance items. And as racerone pointed out, so does your local dealer

Those telltales do clog easily, however, because the motor has a telltale stream doesn't mean the impeller is good.

When was the last time the impeller was changed? If 3 years or more, it is time to replace it. You will want to replace as a minimum, the impeller, SS wearplate and 2 gaskets. If the pump cover shows any scratches, replace that. If you find water in the gearcase, or any melting of the pump base replace it as well.

Ok, let me first say this is my first outboard to work on. I have experience with working on dirt bikes, atv's, etc. I found a searay shop that has the impeller but would have to order the housing if needed. So can you have a look of what I have and see if the housing looks to be replaced.

Mercury used only a few waterpumps on all of their models. They are widely available. Any marine stores near you? They may have what you need. On line is easy as well.

SeaRay used Merc OBs (painted white) on some of their boats. Not sure what kinds of parts they stock.

That impeller / pump housing was used on the bigger outboards from about 1964 to the late 1980's ----And on the stern drives as well.----Shame on any shop that does not have that item in stock.----Or knows how common this item is !

Thanks to all for your help ! I couldn't find the SN# plate on transom mount and mercury told me to look for freeze plug with a letter followed by 6 numbers. I found that and it had A127908 on it. I found a sea ray shop and they used that # and had an impeller in stock. I'll call them Monday about ordering me the housing/kit. I am having trouble finding a manual or parts online using just the # found on the freeze plug.

I'd say not, I took the lower unit back off and the shift shaft in the lower unit won't change the gears, hardly any resistance on it.

Top of the Mercury forum is a tutorial ( 3rd one down ).-----These mistakes are made every day !!-----So turn the shift shaft CCW until you find neutral.----Use a vicegrip on the shift rod as some effort is required.----Put control in neutral and assemble.------If you remove lower unit in neutral it will jump into forward with a bump.----The clutch dog is spring loaded.-----All simple if you understand how it works.

Thanks, I tried to do that and no effort hardly to turn shift shaft and I could never find neutral . Feels like it's not engaging

I`ll try to explain it
When you installed the lower did the shaft socket connect with the splined lower shaft?
Did you place the lower unit if fwd gear ?
Rotate the lower splined shaft untill the prop is locked in a CCW direction, this is fwd gear. If you go past that point continue to rotate the splined shaft in a CW direction untill the prop is locked in a CCW direction.

If you DID NOT move the shift shaft and the lower is in neutral, put control box in neutral and make sure the shift rod end goes on the splined end WITH NO BINDING as you start the nuts
DO NOT FORCE IT ON

Is it possible the shift shaft became disengaged from the clutch dog?

If you pulled the shift rod out of the lower unit , then yes.----But doubt you did that.----Have you looked for the tutorial as mentioned ?-----Have you looked at the simple instruction / followed them from post #13 ???----Sorry, This is really simple.
