impeller change

When you replace an impeller do you need to fit a new seal that goes between the top of the water pump & the water tube to the top of the motor?

Had a mechanic say it should always be changed. I hadn?t heard it mentioned before.

Only if the seal is cracked or torn. Even then, the top seal is redundant. The impeller itself seals against the case so very little water pressure, if any, is against the seal. Think of it this way: There is no seal on the bottom plate of the pump and it functions quite well, thank you.
