Hi I have a 87 16 ft. four winns 160 freedom that someone gave meI want to change the impeller. Do I have to take the upper and lower drive or can I just remove the lower. the boat is on a trailer and the stern drive is in the up position. Could I just drain the oil put the lower in the up position and take the lower off ? Also just how heavy is the lowwer part where the water pump is. Thanks Oh ya it's a 3.0 L

Re: Impellar

Yes you can just drain the oil and drop the lower.
However a word of advice. The ujoints, gimbal bearing, bellows, and engine alignment should all be checked once a year. So depending on your gambleing luck, you might want to pull the drive to check things out.

Lower is about 50-60 pounds.

Ayuh,... Sure, it weighs about 40lbs per 1/2... 80lbs for the whole drive...

I guess Bill's arms are a bit stronger than mine :) After this week of all the moving and driving, even the light boxes feel like they weight a million pounds right now!
