EF, best of luck with treatment and recovery.

NY, I've got two border collies, 10 years and 6 years old. Hopefully I won't have problems for quite awhile, but I know it's gonna get real tough at some point down the road. They're so active that they'll try to run & play even when hurt. I can't imagine what it will be like if severe arthritis or something else disabling sets in.

For those of you who have lost a dog you considered part of your family maybe the following will be of some comfort. Author is unknown.

RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When a pet dies that has been especially close to someone here, it goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and lakes where our special friends run and play together in the sunshine.
There is plenty of food and water, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

Animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor, those who were hurt are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days gone by. The animals are so happy and content they barely notice that they miss someone very special to them who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but a day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have just been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together........
