Re: I'm lost with no real clue

From what I had gathered, he put water in it but found it leaking when he started it on muffs. In any case you would be right. I bet the PO ran it, developed a leak and ran dry. getting it nice and hot. let the boat sit uncovered until gear79 bought it... Exact same leak happened to my dads 488. got hot, so we kept putting lake water in it, to get it back to the dock. fixed the leak with a new WP but the HG was blown. Replaced the HG and then it developed a rod knock.

When I purchased this, I had walked the deck, asked if it ran, and it fired right up. he ran it maybe 2 minutes, there was no cover and given the amount of standing water, never had a cover. I don't have the muffs for it yet, but bought some off ebay. I am chalking this up to a lesson well learned and will dig more on my next find, using the assumption that it is bad til proven good. Thanks for all the help and info guys.

3.0L/140hp is almost a drop in replacement as the outdrives are the same. 1 stringer needs added. If the boat is what you want in a boat, you could find a 3.0L/140 fairly cheap and have an engine you only have to worry about winterizing correctly so you don't crack the block. The sounds of the boat, the transom needs attention so the engine has to come out anyway.

Is winterizing that big of an issue, being I live in south Texas where we hardly ever drop to freezing?

Re: I'm lost with no real clue

I already re-listed back on CL, hopefully, I can get rid of this "project" soon. I will be constanlty looking and had I known then what I know now, I would have never even made contact with this seller nor boat lol.

Best idea you have had, Cut your losses and save your strength, money, time & mental state - Much cheaper in the long run.

Bull, the outdrives are different (ratio wise), the HP is different (by 30HP can you say underpowered) the exhaust system won't line up, and the 470 has a lot of built in problems due to engine design.

The only thing that resembles the same is the motor mounts. Everything else is different.
Do you have any first hand knowledge about either of these engines?

Ayuh,... Just a tip,... Avoid anything with a 470 Merc, or that says OMC on it Anywheres.... ;)

If yer in Love with the hull, a 4.3l would be an Ok swap, though still a long row to hoe....

I looked it up, and your right. 470 OD is 1.81 ratio but a 3.0L uses a 1.91 ratio, so it would need a different prop and might not be the best match for the boat, but it would get it back in the water. Being that 3.0L is rated at the prop and 470 rated at the crank, there probably pretty close in actual HP.. 3.0L swap was the only way mechanics would work on my dads boat. They would not touch the 470 except pull it. Neither of us had the time to do a rebuild or a swap.

Re: I'm lost with no real clue

The 3.0L used a 1.98 gear ratio, no such thing as a 1.91, the 470/170 used a 1.84 again no such thing as a 1.81.
The 3.0L was rated at 140hp at the same time the 170 was listed as 170hp. Both rated with the same procedures.
That info is from Mercruiser. that is still a 30 hp difference.

I stand corrected. Drive ratios I got off of another website, and assumed mercruiser parts was correct, but that could be for a newer 3.0L having more power? I havn't worked on a boat newer than an '84 and the '84 had the 488/ 3.7 LX

Starcraft Aluminum boat. Just stay away from 1's powered with OMC outdrives as parts are drying up and mechanics don't like to work on them.. An outboard model would be about the easiest to deal with. There are also other tinny's that are simmilar. Bluefin and Sea Nymph both built simmilar aluminum boats

Head for the Boat topics and questions forum. That's where that kind of question belongs.
