Ilmor/Yanmar Drive Trim Pump Relay issue

Hello,
I have a 2018 Formula 350CBR with the Ilmor 7.4 MPI-S and OneDrive. The starboard drive started only trimming up and would not come down. I swapped the relays, 1 up and 1 down, and then the drive would go down but not up. I bought 10 new relays from Digi-Key, same part number, and none of them work, only the single original relay actually works in either plug.

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to iboats

I looked up the relay for the one drive and found it to be same as Merc/VP uses which is 5 pin cube type.

Trying to find a wiring diagram but have not yet found one. If its like Merc/VP then moving the relay should effect which way unless there is a far outside chance the relay is shorted and causing a different kind of connection.

Can you verify it is a 5 pin cube relay?

Thanks for helping. It is a standard automotive style 5 pin SPDT relay. The Yanmar pump has 1 relay for each drive trim direction so I can swap the up relay to the down socket and it goes down but none of the new relays work in the sockets.

Just thought more about what you said.

First drive would go up but not down.

Swapped relays and it goes down but not up

Then bought 10 relays and it only works with the one original relay.... Meaning, the new relays you bought are not the same as the one that still work,

In the pic above showing the internal wiring of the relay notice pin 87A. Many of the relays do not have a internal connection to 87A (normally closed contact). They look like the 5 pin but many only have 4 pins.

You have one correct relay that still works and the rest are not correct type

Being the az980 says its a 4 pin relay does not have a normally open (NO) contact.
The az980-1 is a 5 pin with a NO contact

OK, but something is missing
Compare visually the old and new relays to make certain pin 30 and 87A is in same locations referencing the other pins.

If that checks, use a ohm meter and check continuity between those 2 pins. Then check between 30 and 87 which should be open

Check to see if the wiring connectors got pushed out the bottom of the wiring receptacle

I just tested both relays and they work on the bench, I will check the socket, but odd that 1 works in the sockets and 5 do not.

So I went down to the boat and said "let's just try 2 new relay's and eliminate the old good one" and now it works!
