I spent some time searching existing threads but all I found was a post by Don S with a link to a Mercruiser bulletin ( http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Bullet/95/95_11.pdf ). The information on the bulletin unfortunately doesn't address the 5.0L engines with Pretolite distributors. I guess Mercruiser didn't use Prestolite distributors in their 305's.

The engine in question is a V/P BB225B (305) 1986 vintage with the original Prestolite distributor however modified with a Petronix electronic ignition module. The intial timing on the V/P shop manual is 8 deg BTDC but it doesn't mention the total advance timing. Does anyone know the total advance and rpm for this engine?

Thanks in advance.

PS. Don S. we miss your advice in the "New" BOC forum.

Bond-o,

Thanks. So...32 deg. @ 4400 rpm (red line for this engine)? That sounds difficult to check. Do you know the advance at a little more reasonable rpm (3000ish)?
