1990 J120TLES<br /><br />I have to replace my trim motor Saturday. I have to perform this task while timing the tide right and beaching the boat. I figure I'll get about 7 hours. <br /><br />1. How often do the mounting bolts for the unit shear/break when trying to remove them. <br /><br />2. How likely is it that the 3 phillips head screws for the motor won't come out without stripping the heads or breaking them.<br /><br />3. The new motor does not have an o ring groove or a new o ring. Should there be a groove? Should I go get an o ring?<br /><br />This motor has been in salt only 2 months. <br /><br />Any first hand knowledge would be helpful. <br /><br />Thanks, John

you shouldn't have much problem removing the trim motor hex bolts w/philip slots. Use a socket wrench to break the bolts loose. <br /><br />You need a new o-ring gasket for the install and there should not be a groove in pump motor for the o-ring.<br /><br />Take plenty of fresh water with you with some good cleaner and a scraper and clean the area around the pump motor/tilt unit very well before you remove it.Dry area well. Take a clean rag and cover the opening as soon as you pull the motor out. You don't want to get anything (sand/dirt) in the valve body.Inspect the valve body for any debri before installing new motor. Clean threads and apply anti seize paste to all bolts on install.

I replaced mine on a 150 Evinrude. It's never seen salt water but. It took me 3 hours counting the 1 1/2 hours it took me to go get the motor. The bolts came loose easly, the phillips didn't give me any trouble, and the new motor didn't have an o-ring if i can remember correctly. I think the housing was sealed on mine, and i think the motor shaft might have a seal. I could be wrong about the o-ring but i'm almost sertain.

I think it would be a lot easier, and safer to do this job with the boat on a trailer. Do I misunderstand here! Are you going to just have the boat sitting on the beach? I know if you put me on a beach, I can't keep sand out of my food, I don't know how I would do with a trim motor.

Well I'm kinda screwed as I don't have another driver to meet me at the boat ramp which is 3 miles away from my (mainland) mooring. You can't leave the boat unattended while going for the truck, and you can't leave the truck while going for the boat. I have no choice other than to beach boat, lay out tarp, remove unit and take it to my (island)cottage and replace trim motor at kitchen table, then reinstall unit on boat.<br />The boat will be fully out of water for several hours. I don't plan on opening up the system in the sand, just removing the PT&T off the boat.

I don't know about your particular configuration, but when I replaced the tilt/trim motor on my 1985 2.6 liter OMC seadrive engine I had about a half-cup of oil spill out. Be prepared!

To my surprise everything went great yesterday with this task. No broken bolts, no stripped screws, no contamination of the system, and only a small amount of blood spilled. Ended up just waiting a few hours for the tide to come back in as the job only took 1. Thanks to all for their responses to my post.
