idle to slow?

Ok guys I have a 1977 Evinrude 55 hp.

When I crank it up in the water with the warm up lever about half way up it will idle all day. When I lower the lever so I can put it in gear it will run for about 30 seconds and the idle will slow down until it sputters out and dies. It does the same thing when you put it in gear with no throttle.

I rebuilt the carbs and did a link and sync, also rebuilt the fuel pump. Im going to try to decarb the engine with some seafoam and see if that helps.

What is causing this!?! Its driving me crazy!

Thanks again everyone.

Re: idle to slow?

sounds like an air leak in the fuel line, pump the ball and listen with the cowl off for seeping.

What RPM does it idle at?

I will guess it may be the air fuel mix adjustment,or the idle rpm set screw. After the carb redo did you adjust the air fuel needle and set the rpms to the specs?

Your mtr has fixed idle jets in it and make sure the idle circuits in the carbs are good and clean. Try adjusting the idle speed screw to bring your idle up. Do the decarb and do it good. Maybe twice or so.
