According to the weather forecast from this past monday, it was to be 70's and 30% chance of rain. 70's yes with much rain and clouds Friday. I planned to launch my boat for its seasonal stay at the dock.

After work, the sky opened up and off we go to the lake to get the bottom of the boat wet. Launch went well (plug was in :D ), started engine and got to the dock without any problems. We looked up in the sky and could see that in the west the sky was getting very dark. I told my BIL (bro in law) that I think we can make it back to the house to drop off the trailer and back to the boat before it rains/storms.

I get to the house before it started to rain. With my bucket truck and 36' trailer, I need lots of room to manuver. Of course it is quitting time for folks and the highway in front of my house had heavy traffic. Finally I ended up blocking both lanes of traffic and backing the trailer back along the side of my house. (as in my avatar) All of a sudden this guy on a Harley pulls into the drive. As I'm having some problems getting the angle I needed, this guy is now in my way. Uggg, don't know him, why is he here? Remember, I'm in a hurry to get back to my boat to make sure the tops are up, and the boat is secure for the approaching storm.

Once I got everything parked, he introduced himself. I said sorry, I'm not intrested at this time. Please leave and come back after 3 pm monday thru thrusday. Fridays is not a good time as you can see. I pointed into the sky and said that you better leave or your going to get stuck in the downpour. I can't believe this guy. He pulls out his tape measure and starts to measure for a quote. I say, "Hey! you got to go, I'm in a hurry and as you can see the empty boat trailer, I want to get back to the lake and make sure my boat is secure for the storm. He still preceded to go thru his ritual of obtaining info for a quote.

Finally I took and left him, gathered my things that I needed and headed back out to my van. As I was getting into my van he then again wants to talk. I said, "Sorry, I do not have time for this and your on a bike with a storm that is about to hit any minuet." Okay he says, I'll send the owner out next week to talk to you.

After he said that, he got on his bike and as soon as he got on the highway,,,,,,,,it started downpouring. Serves him right! Luck had it that the storm was north of the lake and not much rain fell there, so the boat was okay.

Come monday,,,,about 6 am, I'm going to call the company and tell them that no way will I have your company do my roof. This is due to the ingornace of the salesperson that stopped by my house without appointment, and even asking him to leave. No respect for my time, No job for them,,,and it doesn't matter if they would be cheaper or not. I just hate pushy people that have no respect.

Going to check to see if they are registered with the county to do work. When I questioned him on it, he didn't seem like he understood what I was asking, so I think that company is not regeistered.

Okay, my rant is over and headed back to the boat to lower the blood pressure and to raise a few 12 ouncers :D Life is so much better on a boat :D

More patience than I got over something like that.
Now days if they ain't leaving within 5 seconds after being told, the law is on the way to explain it to them better.

Re: Idiot Roofing Contractor

Why would he target your house?

I'm guessing he probably asked for a quote, but they never scheduled an appointment.

The rain totally serves him right. God is clearly on your side here. :D

Re: Idiot Roofing Contractor

Why would he target your house?

Because my house sits on a main route and it is easy to see that my roof does need replaced. I think while he was sitting on the road waiting for me to get the trailer backed in is when he took time to really look at my roof. It doesn't have any leaks but the shingles is cupping. I hope it will continue to NOT leak until next summer. I'm planning on doing it myself with my buds and lots of beer afterwards. Materials will come to about $1800, dumpster $100, beer $80, BBQ $40, and his quote is between $3000 & $4000 for 3 tab 20 year shingles!.

Will only need to flash around one chimmney and no valleys to deal with. We should be able to tear off and lay down felt/shingles in one weekend. Going to use the 30 year dimensional ones. Just love how fast and durable they are. They also look great also. There is not a major pitch to the roof which will make it much easier as well.

I would have had it replaced already,,,,,,,,,but I"M A BOAT OWNER with a need for accessories :D

Re: Idiot Roofing Contractor

Well, SS, re-roofing was originally scheduled for this past weekend, but postponed to 5/9 and 10 due to rain forecasts. My sons, granddaughter, wive, DILs, and assorted friends enlisted to help.

Lowest bid = $5,300, by a guy that's done a very good job on 3 other neighbors. My cost= $2,100 materials + $300 dumpster + BBQ etc (no beer or similar beverages for this family). Really thought about the work involved and cost difference, but for soon-to-be-unemployed, the cost savings made the difference.

I'd probably would have just left the guy to finish his estimate, and told him to mail it to me.

I'm planning on doing it myself with my buds and lots of beer afterwards.

By all means, afterwards. I was roofing my storage shed years ago, while drinking beer. I missed a step suddenly and did a rapid, semi-controlled descent down the ladder. Waited until the next day to continue. Now I don't drink at all and wonder how I lived through those years.

Yep, no drinking while the job is in progress. I want the job to look professional as possible. About 8 years ago my bud had the gang do his roof. He said it was okay to drink beer while doing it. Boy did it look bad afterwards. By the time they got to the top, it was off by a course and a half. That is not easy to straighten out by the time you get to the peak.

Then 2 years ago, the gang was together doing another buds house. It was Saturday night and the roof was done except for the ridge vent. All of us got down and tapped his keg. Two stayed up to finsih the ridgevent. One was placing the cap shingles while the other was using the nail gun. Poor ole Randy was at the end of the peak of the roof and back stepped right off the roof. Messed his back up pretty bad and ruptured his spleen. He spent the next 2 weeks in the hospital. So the new rule is not to be on the roof after dark. BTW, Randy is okay now and is doing fine.

I checked today with codes and permits to see if this contractor was listed,,,,,,HE"S NOT!......So, I gave them the business card that he gave me. C & P also said that in my area the is no soliciting without a permit. They said thanks and that they were going to give them a call.

I don't like getting anyone into trouble, but make sure that all your stuff is in order first and do things right. To me it is unfair to compete against those that do the things that are required to run a business right.........SS
