identify my stern

Hello all. I have a 84 Merc stern drive, that has missing numbers on the serial number. Is there any other way that i would be able to find out the model I believe it is a 330, but all the parts and info i am getting is for bravo.

so it looks like I have the merc 1 or the alpha 1 based on the trim tab I took off.

I thought that as well after i followed the link, but trim tab is different. can I assume then that would be an aftermarket part? The trim tab I mean

The trim cylinders have been replaced, or the boat use to have a MR and the drive was replaced with the MC-1

The ventilation plate looks to have the front part of it broken

Do you know would a lower rebuild kit be the same? I replaced the impeller. following the Seloc guide instructions and now my drive shaft and propeller shaft, are not in synch anymore. unless someone can help me figure out why, without tearing it apart. I am a fiberglass electrical and engine guy I need to order a rebuild kit for my lower unit. I replaced the impeller. following the Seloc guide instructions and now my drive shaft and propeller shaft, are not in synch anymore. I am hoping to be back in the water on the 4th.

The Seloc manuals for the most part are junk, you need a Mercruiser manual number 4 for the MC-1 or 6 for the MR

To connect lower to upper, rotate the shift shaft/foot so prop lock in a counter-clockwise direction. Shift foot facing forward. Place a bungee cord on the prop so it stays locked

Have the throttle lever full forward position. Lift drive up into position and bolt up. Remove bungee cord

What trim tab?
The ventilation plate looks to have the front part of it broken
you are correct it is broken I just looked at it. the ventilation plate.

The prop is off. and the throttle lever was forward when i took it off. when I rotate when I rotate it by the shaft the drive does not move. they move freely but not together as they should. Or am I missing something?

Your not engaging the drive in-gear. Rotate The lower drive shaft so the prop locks in counter-clockwise (I said prior clockwise but should be counter-clockwise) direction. Need to do this so the drive is engaged in the forward direction. Not doing it in this manor means the drive is in between FWD and REV

The best method is to remove the entire drive then separate and fix. This way you can (and should) check drive engine alignment

still no go when I rotate the prop shaft the drive shaft does not turn. It did when I took it out It was running great until the overheat. Question. Does the prop need to be on for the two to work together, forcing the prop shaft into the drive? It doesn't make sense to me, but again, I rebuild engines, rewire, and repair fiberglass. I have never worked on a drive until this morning.

Your working with what is called a dog clutch. Hey @Bt Doctur could use your input
The clutch engages in only one direction and it's opposite of the rotation of the prop.

If the clutch is engaged then the prop can be rotated clockwise and it will click several times as the prop rotates.

It will also not rotate in the counter-clockwise rotation
When the prop shaft is locked in, the drive shaft should do the same as prop shaft (rotate and click on one direction and not rotate in the other) that said it is nothing to bother with because we are concerned with the lower prop shaft and not the drive shaft

Ayuh,..... Rotating the drive shaft engages the prop shaft,....
