True freshman are 1st year student/athletes. 2nd year freshman have been on the team for a year but played in 4 or fewer games so they could declare a “redshirt “ year and still have 4 years of eligibility left. Academically they are a sophomore, but eligibility wise still a freshman.
I would think a way around it would to insert a no transfer clause into any athletic scholarship. No?
That would go against the spirit of the NIL. You are no longer allowed to hinder these amateur players from making a profit. I don’t have a problem with the portal, my issue is with the implementation of it. I get you want the portal to be open around the end of the school semester, but it shouldn’t be open before the playoffs and bowl games are finished, in my opinion. A player could still sit out, but you would have to wonder how that would hurt his status in the portal. Other teams are not allowed to “court” a player who has not declared for the portal.
It is a crazy, stick mess!
