i want to paint bottom of my boat, the local store said the only thing i could use was anti-fouling paint(yuck). its an old fiberglass jon boat that was treated badly. i sanded off all the camo crap to the gel coat. now i have a few spots to touch up Gel coat (opps) over sanding and a couple of small holes from screws(???) lol. what paint do i use that i can polish and wax so it looks nice and easy to clean

Re: i want to paint bottom of boat

My buddy and I are in the process of the same thing. We actually flipped ours over tho. Here is the steps we have taken.

1. washed
2. bevel out and fill all obvious holes and cracks.
3. fair the filled spots.
4. sanded with 120 and marked smaller cracks and holes that were not as obvious.
5. Fair those new filled spots
6. sand with 220
7. Filled MORE missed spots
8 repeat 5
9. go over all faired spots with 120 and 220
10. hand sanded boat with 320
11. wiped down
12. ready for primer tomorrow.

Not sure what paint we are using yet. Leaning towards Interlux Perfection.
Going to marine paint store tomorrow.

I used "oops PB" well sort of haha, Ours is poly resin, q-cell (glass bubbles), milled fibers and cabosil. Its sort of a pain to sand.

I was going to ask the same thing. What about going just poly cabosil and
3m glass bubbles? Might still be a pain to sand.

You can fill the low spots, just bevel out the edges. We just primered over our gel coat. We used DuPont 2 part epoxy primer. Its supposed to be bullet proof. The entire marina in our area is using it according to the owner of the shop we got it from. He told us that it can bond to the old gel coat fine and will out last whatever paint we put over it.

just make sure to thin the 2 part paint with paint thinner once it is mixed or it will be very thick, now we have lots of sanding to do.

Bottom ( anti fouling ) paint is designed for boats that sit in a slip all year long, not a jon boat that is going to be in the lake for a few hours at a time. Imron is some tough stuff if you are looking for a durable paint. It mostly depends on availability and how much you want to spend on the paint....boat paint can get up in the hundreds per gallon
