Re: I want a Bayliner!!!

BWT, I read similar posts on other boating forums. Guess US Marine invited management from all the big boat forums. Just wondering if you saw Stratocaster (Mike) from BOC? Anyone from BoatUS? Did you end up sharing boat tests with management of other forums?

Just wondering.

Yeah, I met Stratocaster, great guy! He and another member from the Bayliner Owners Club were there. My understanding was that they were the only other forum members. The rest were from traditional mags and/or commercial websites as opposed to forums.

QC, it was great to meet you at the above mentioned event. Myself and Rick have put a number of reviews on BOC, go check them out.

We crosslinked to this thread over on BOC, but I won't do that here, not sure of the rules.

Bayliner is usually on the low end of the market when it comes to quality and resale value.

Re: I want a Bayliner!!!

I think Bayliner agrees with you, Scarab Excel, as it relates to their older boats. The point of this thread, along with the comments I heard and the quality that I saw first hand, is that they are making a serious effort to correct that reputation. More accurately, they continue to be very value conscious, as that is consistent with their customer base, but they are striving to offer the highest quality possible while still offering their boats at affordable prices.

BTW, these comments are mine. I have not been paid by US Marine for anything. I have, however, seen some very impressive boats with excellent performance. This is not the same Bayliner in my opinion.

Well I think they where built to fit into a lower income budget which they did for many years and they have sold 1000's of them. Alot still out there today.

I dont think getting into the high end market will help boost sales, they need to stay focus on getting the best for the lease amount of money. That is what they built the company on.

Re: I want a Bayliner!!!

From my experience the true measure of a crafts quality shows over time. Though the initial look feel and fit and finish are what seal the deal for new buyers. How the interior wears, how well the gauges hold up, does the gel coat hold it's color. A craft that feels solid and does not develop rattles, squeaks, or ''loosen up" after several seasons of use is truly a quality craft .

Yeah LT, I agree. That is the type of things I looked for. How things were attached, supported etc. And those have also been some of my criticisms and suggestions for improvement.

Scarab dude, I think we are also saying similar things. They are not trying to reach for the higher end market. They are trying to improve their quality while maintaining their high value position and competitive pricing. That's what I think I heard them say.

Very good insight for us QC, thanks. I guess a great to place to start with quality is making sure nothing is wrong or poorly built and everything works the way it was intended.
With nothing wrong the quality reputation follows I suppose........(worked for the Japanese car makers).
Its good to have people in 'the know' on this kind of stuff. It sure helps the rest of us understand whats out there.
Good info, good read!!

QC, don't you think that it is strange that some of the most prolific posters on this forum have been asked by iboats to review brand new boats?

I think both you and Tashasdaddy wrote good honest comments on these boats and you both were very up front with who was behind the arrangements, however, it just seems to be a marketing tool by iboats and the boat manufacturers to use certain highly regarded and prolific posters to review their product.

Is there really anything wrong with that policy. It seems like good marketing to me. I believe that the best people to test boats might just be those who make their living writing about them and something that US Marine did this time is inviting actual Bayliner owners to test their new designs.

Who is better than someone who has intimate knowledge about the brand.

Re: I want a Bayliner!!!

I have to agree with the above comment, if the writers are open and honest. Since moving to the USA from Europe, I rarely see any magazine say if something is good or bad everything is good, because if they say it's bad the manufacturers won't ask them to test the next product.
I was really suprised to find almost every article in any magazine comparing several products just leaves a very wishy washy summary. In Europe they clearly state product A is better or worse than product B. In the 2 years I have been here in the USA I find that you cannot get a real answer due to everyone's fear of being sued or being black listed from future products by the manufacturer.
I may be wrong about iBoats, but it is a comercial site and they sell lots of products, so I would not expect a totally open and honest answer (if they didn't like a product) as they do not want to upsett their suppliers (or loose sales of a particular product), but the reports still make interesting reading and should be used with other reports to form a balanced opinion..

Re: I want a Bayliner!!!

I expected this to come up, and I am glad that it did. I am not a Bayliner owner. I have only owned what I call "Custom Boats", very common in CA and AZ. They are built to order with custom gelcoat graphics and colors that the owner decides and even can design. Custom interiors to match. So much not a production Bayliner that my opinions are from an entirely different angle than previous Bayliner owners. I am not being paid. Yes I post a lot here, and that may or may not gain me some credibility. I guess the way I see this is would you rather get info like this only from Magazines that these builders advertise on, or only from the manufacturer? Orrrrr can you respect that US Marine has decided to engage the online forum's community to independently review their boats? I think it takes a lot of guts to do that. I could've posted anything I wanted. Yeah, I might have PO'd some people, but I could've done that. I still could. But the fact is, I see a difference in their boats, I see a difference in their approach to quality, and a desire to rebuild their brand's reputation. I think that deserves praise, so I am gonna give it. I would say and post the same things if one of my friends bought one and I had climbed all over it, this program just injected me with info before I would've learned it myself . . .

Ya know I spent a while thinking about the title of this thread. I was struggling frankly. And then it hit me while I was running the new 300 Cruiser up the river, I wanted that boat to be mine . . . That was enough for me.

Re: I want a Bayliner!!!

QC doesn't work for, or paid by, iboats or Bayliner. He was chosen to independently review the new offerings.

If you've read any of QC's posts you'd know that he tells it like it is.
