Don't worry about a cracked Block. Plenty of freeze plugs will pop before that happens. Now heads are another matter. Shooting water out of a plug hole is reason for concern.:D

I'm just saying this because I repaired an engine, I thought, before doing a compression check. I replaced freeze plugs with the expansion type, and when I cranked the engine, water shot clean out of the boat, from a plug hole. Great compression, although you can't compress a liquid.

Check your compression when you get a chance;)

BTW, Love the boat, fantastic buy!

Re: I think I found one Need help

I'd bet it was winterized properly...the gentleman owned 5 boats and 30 cars?!? Anyone with those means and appreciation for fine modes of trasnportation AND lives in Michigan...knows that the toys need to be properly maintained.

Bwana you can stop checking craigslist now, for a little while anyway:)

This was a scrapyard of sorts. His daughter said his recycling business was a front for hoarding. "His" stuff was taken care of but the rest was your normal scrapyard type junk. His son said he was anal about taking care of things so I hope he had a chance to winterize. I'll find out when it warms up, it's 10 degrees out right now. It is what it is I suppose.

I still need Craigslist. Where else would I find an old Mer 9.9 with no spark for $50!! I need a kicker now, right.

P Sound; no old Ford coupes, sorry. Michigan is not kind to old cars here. Your neck of the woods is a much better hunting ground. Love them old Fords too. I had a 1954 F250 I brought back from Wyoming. I was stationed out there in the 80's. Wish I still had her:(.

Thanks to all here in this forum. You guys to some nice restoration work and are an inspiration.

Those 9.9 Mercs are notorious for losing spark. I've seen a couple that had spark but would loose it as soon as you advance the throttle. It was the two little wires coming out from under the flywheel, left of the carb. or that module they were connected to. They would go to ground as soon as you moved the timer base.

Warm weather for everyone, I want to see the restos again. I really can't wait to fire mine up.I went on half.com and got 2 manuals on the motor and out drive. Got them real cheap too. I bought a tarp and shoveled the snow from inside. Time to read up on the Mercruiser 3.0 and wait for a break in the weather.

If anyone wants books for cheap go to half.com. You can get a great deal on used books.

Way to go BD, looks like a great find and what a price. I can't believe how cheap boats sell for in the US. I too had a long way to go to pick my SS up 1600 km return so 800 with an unknown trailer, the only problem I had was the new ball reciever they put on the tongue, had been over tightend and collapsed the tube and became loose, good thing I had tools with me. But I also had to pay 8 X what you did.

The Detroit area has 15% unemplyment, nobody has an extra dime nowadays. My house is worth 65% of what I paid for it 12 years ago:eek:. Stuff is going cheap around here, it's a bloody firesale. I'm one of the lucky ones, my job is steady even though I work in Manufacturing.

I plain got lucky on this deal though. If the lady had not mistakenly listed it as a 15' it probably would have been gone before I got there. I jumped pretty fast, found it on a Wednesday and bought in on a Saturday.

Dozer can't imagine that long of a trip with a trailer I didn't know anything about! I was a bit nervous with my short 85 mile trip. I kept thinking about EZ and siezed up wheel bearings.

Here is ia good one I sold a 19 Glasply high top to a sales manager at Lighthouse Dressings in Sandpoint Idaho, two summers ago. We have a summer home 12 miles from there so I said I would deliver it to him ( 420) mile trip one way. WELLLL I got 40 miles from his house and spun a bearing on a trailer I totally went thru before I advertised it. Long story short I said I surley am not going to leave you with a Micky Mouse repair on a axel. I took the trailer to the local Les Schwab Tire dealer, said fix it ,call the owner to pick it up and send me the bill. Total bill was $800 . Very little profit on that deal . I used to buy Glasply boats restore them and resell as a hobby , but it became almost impossible to make any $ on them. They were a Hell of a Salt water boat . Ill post a few photos of my last few years and my boat gallery. You were very fortunate to get home without any problems.

BD The guy I bought mine from said he repacked the bearins before he listed the boat, they turned out okay. It did have three different tires. Th only problem was the tongue. Till yesterday found out the o/b is nfg. number two piston lost the top ring. but still had great compression???

Anyhow Good for you and a great buy.

Re: I think I found one Need help

I just realized, I didn't get a title for the boat. The family couldn't find it. They did give me a bill of sale though, so I have no idea what I bought:confused:.

So my question is; how do I know what year my boat is? There is an ID plate inside the boat with a serial number. Can the year be determined from the #?

Here is what the id plate says;
Model Offshore I/O
xxx870

Any help from the "Starcraft Nation" would be greatly appreciated.

OOOooooooo.

You might be in for a bit of a headache. Seems like the Secretary of State gives me a hard time even when I have everything I need right in front of them! You may want to call them ahead of time and see what they need from you before you go in there and waste a bunch of your time. Trailer too if that didn't have a title. You may need to have that weighed (or they might be nice and just give a good guess). Good Luck!

BW-

You really need to work with the seller on finding or getting a replacement title. Doing it on your own with just a Bill of Sale is a pain. Took six months and several petitions to the ODNR here in Ohio to get a title for an Outboard. Be prepared, ears perk up when you start telling issuing agencies how you bought a titled vehicle without a title transfer. Start working on it now, with luck you'll have your paperwork in time to use it this summer.

Re: I think I found one Need help

I found out from Michigan Secretary of State that this boat needs a title. Normally a bill of sale is good enough for under 18', unless it has a fixed engine. This means I/O, so I need a title. I'll have to ask the previous owner to apply for a title. I don't know if her dad ever titled it. The last tag on the boat is from 08.

I hope this goes smoothly, just in case I am putting the restoration on hold. once I resolve this title thing I'll start moving forward.

Any word on the year and or model of this boat. The last two digits are 70, does this mean it's a 1970?

Re: I think I found one Need help

I emailed the daughter about a title. I'm sure they will take care of it. In Michigan if it has an affixed engine then it needs a title period.

On a brighter note, I think I figured out what I have here. It;s an Offshore -V18, 1970 vintage. It's got the 140 hp, and I think it's 3.0 liter.

I shoveled the snow out of the inside today. The floor is bare wood, no sealant or paint. It is solid and has a covering of some sort over it (carpet???). Outside paint is very good, but the interior is shot to heck.

I'm thinking a restoration minus outside paint. I'll have to look it over really good to determine for sure.

I'll be paying more dues this weekend. Good luck on everybody's project
