I'm thinking this is an 18' SS:D. If it is I'm ready to pull the trigger. I talked to the owner all ready and asked for more pictures. This boat is 2 hours North of me. I hate to drive there if it's not an 18 footer.

Did Starcraft put an I/O in the 16 SS, or only 18 foot and up? Any help or advice appreciated.

Looks good for what you can see. outdrive looks good. If I was only 2 hours away I would be there to check it out by now. Hard to find what your looking for. As these become more popular to restore they will become harder to find.

Re: I think I found one Need help

I'm going Saturday. I work late Thursday and Friday to make some time. By the time I get to Saginaw it will be dark. I'll keep my fingers crossed for 3 more days. If I know it's an 18' I might make an offer on the phone.

They are sending more pictures this evening, so maybe I'll know if it's a 16 foot or 18 foot. If it's an 18 foot I'm going for it.

It's out in the open and covered with a light blanket of snow right now. What should I offer them? What should I look for?

Thanks,
Don

Just saw it this morning at work....on break, yea. No time to check it out yet.

If the hull is good ( be sure to look under it. and the boat is complete( looks ok ) . With a motor that runs and a decent trailer I would offer them the asking price. Out west here it would be a real steal at that price. It needs a cover on it as the weather there won''t do the interior any good. Keep us posted looks like a instant buy to me . Esp. if its a 18 ft. We have a boat dealer thats asking $850 for a 14 ft row boat. Yikes.

My guess is 16'. Looks nice although it is tough for me to overcome my bitter hatred of I/O's :p

If it's a 16 footer then I'll pass on it. Really looking for an 18' even up to 20'
ideally 18 or 19 fits my driveway.

EZ: Been following your resto on the 18 SS. My 6 year old loves your color combo. I read the posts to him and explain what's going on. I'm hoping this boat is an 18. The casting platform in front would come in handy.

While we're on the subject of I/O. What's wrong with them? Looks like there is more room to fish with an I/O. Seems like the outboard takes up more space in the rear. Don't they use less gas too? I don't see the downside here. I've never owned one though so any education would be appreciated.

Starcraft did make a 16ft SS with an I/O, so it very well could be. They are about as rare as the 22' SS, I'd get it I were you. Great price:)

Hey Don, I eyed that up too! Looks like a nice boat for a real fair price! I am thinking that it's prolly a 16 footer. I wanted to jump on it but am restraining myself for the bigger boat that I really need. Have fun man!

Contact the seller....the length is on the title. Looks like sixteen to me. If I didn't already have 3 boats, I'd be all over this deal. Like someone else said decent 14' row boats are bringing a grand. Good Luck.

Washington is a hike for me. I'll stick to MI, OH, & IN, there's a ton of Starcraft boats around the Great Lakes. Thanks for the offer though. Oh yea, 22 foot is really pushing it in my driveway. 18 fits just right and is big enough for St. Clair.

Money, now I'm broke. I'd be spending money I don't really have right now. Wifey will beat me if I buy now. If a good deal comes along though I'll take the beating. In the spring/summer I'll have a few bucks to spend and her blessing. For an 18 SS now, I'll take the heat:p, especially if it comes with a nice price.

Re: I think I found one Need help

I'd really recommend against getting an old I/O if you're on a budget. Just catching up on all the deferred maintenance (bellows, etc) can cost you a pretty penny. Probably some no longer available parts issues as well.

I admit I'm strongly biased against I/O's. But it just seems to be that if you take 2 otherwise identical cheap (like $1000 or less) Starcrafts (or anything) one with an outboard and one with an I/O.......you have a much better chance of getting out on the water quickly and inexpensively with the outboard. Can you end up with a total lemon of an outboard? Of course, but I think you have better odds of success.

Ed, I don't golf so no worries there. Maybe I'll hide my more expensive fishing rods though. I got a couple of graphite bass rods I'm partial to.

I looked through the brochures and I don't see a 16' i/o. I'm thinking this is an 18.

If you look at the SS page in the '77 brochure you will see that they offered the 16' in OB or I/O. Probably in the years prior as well, since the one you're looking at doesn't look like a '77, more like a '72-'75.

Unfortunately we are lacking brochures for those years, so it's hard to say for sure. SC also made a 16' Jupiter I/O in the late 60s/early 70s, and it was rated for a 80hp I/O if you can believe that:D

Does she have a tape measure?

Re: I think I found one Need help

Thanks Huron Angler. An 80 hp I/O sounds like parts would be hard to get. I was really hoping to hear that SC did not put an I/O in a 16' boat.

I'm still waiting on the owner to let me know, Find the title or use a tape measure to verify. I'm set to go there Saturday anyway. My brother and his 4x4 will haul me up there. We got some snow here:D:D. Feels like Michigan now.

Well EZ, you've given me a lot to think about. I've done some research on I/O's and I can see how they would nickel dime you to death. I read somewhere about converting an I/O to an outboard. Is this pratical or just crazy?

Re: I think I found one Need help

I just checked the 1974 brochure posted on yahoo groups "groups.yahoo.com/group/starcraft_boats/" in the Files section. There is no 16' SS I/O identified, only an 18' I/O. Looks like in '74 the 16' was OB only, so probably the same in '73. I have a '73 18 SS I/O, and have had no problems at all other than normal maintenance. I bought it for $750, and spent approx. $600 to have the annual outdrive service, including replacing the entire outdrive water pump as a proactive measure, and replaced the worn out exhaust bellows with an exhaust tube. It cruises comfortably in the mid to upper 20's and tops out around 38 mph. I routinely get 6-7 mpg. Parts for the Mercruiser are NOT a problem. Good luck.

My point proven

In my opinion...it's feasible on larger boats but fairly crazy on smaller ones. Also, iboats member Tacklewasher did this conversion on an 18' SS and hated the result.
