Re: I/O vs outboard

top one is a tautog, I think; taken in the last couple days by jet ski brian which is why she's got warm clothes.

Julie has a red drum aka redfish and a cobia. These big guys are caught on fairly light tackle and salt water fly fishing for these monsters is very popular around here. They even fly fish for marlin now.

Home Cooking,

Good pics. I am not familiar with salt water fish due to being in the center of the country. What kind are they?
217270 Might be a Tautog, hard to tell from that angle
217272 is a Cobia
217273 is a Red Drum

Re: I/O vs outboard

I was going to say, how did this thread turn into a girly thread????????????????

My preference is OB, had both. Around here, OBs for fishing, I/Os for cruzing/playing. You rarely see an I/O used for fishing. If you do, they're not very serious.....

Pretty sure I said this on page one. I thought this should of been locked after that post. lol

all in good fun, especially when the initial question lends itself to non-serious debate, good-natured ribbing, informed and uninformed opinions and personal preference, rather than the exchange of factual information (other than the fact that outboards are better, that is).

Re: I/O vs outboard

LOL I do lust for an OB BTW. I will admit that at any time. any day. I've been running a 115 Merc 2 cycle lately and it has been a lot of fun. I've had to constantly remind myself to buy Oil and came close to running out recently when I simply forgot to stock up on board. Can't say I have ever had that problem with an I/O :nerd:

One thing I love about an OB is the ability to run any power level at any trim level. Shallow water operation is often cited as a benefit of an I/O, but the fact is I can't get my skeg above the lowest point of the keel, and even at that height it is tough on u-joints. With an OB you can run them as high as you have water at the intake grates which is well above the bottom. Helpful in some of the shallows I run in.

Re: I/O vs outboard

Kidding aside, the shallow water capability of an OB is a big factor. However, if you boat over a rocky bottom, it's really not that important because there you aren't likely to risk shallow water driving in the first place. So it's probably not so much a lake v salt as it is rocks v beach/mud when it comes to chosing which suits your own boating best--and explains in part why the regional difference in the preference.

Calling one of our beloved Chesapeake Red Drum a "Redfish" is boarder line insult. :D

The Chesapeake Red Drum are a different strain than their "smaller "redfish" brothers. 10 out of the top 16 largest Red Drum ever caught are Chesapeake Fish. The current world record, a #94 Chesapeake fish caught off the OBX.

FWIW: I caught a mid-#80 fish off AI 4 years ago that would have placed but didn't have a witness to make it offical... the hunt goes on.

Funny to learn after all this time that little Danny was screaming about a fish.

Re: I/O vs outboard

My first boat was an outboard, 650 Merc 3cyl, and I hated mixing oil, so I coveted an I/O.

A few years later, my brother and I were given an old Sea Ray I/O.
No problem, V8 Chevy power, junk yard long blocks can be had cheap....
The problem was the OMC outdrive. It had frozen and was junk. A replacement was hard to find and way too expensive.
No switching to a cheaper and easier to find Merc I/O due to the massive hole in the transom.

My current boat has a mid 90's oil injected outboard. Far enough along in the evolution of oil injection to be reliable, so I don't have to mix oil.

When it comes to boats, nothing is cheap.
The only advantage in my opinion to I/O or straight inboards is the availability of relatively cheap automotive based motors.

That said, it's outboards for me.
I'm a saltwater trailer boater.

Re: I/O vs outboard

I think we should mandate only one boat design for all people. That would solve this.
I've said for many years that if this law ever came into effect I'd wanna poontoon boat. The minvan of boats. Carry a buncha crap, and/or passengers ...

That'd be the one I'd choose.

edit. Plus you can get a poontoon with OB or I/O? Problem solved ...

Re: I/O vs outboard

I have always felt that I/O setup is not as stout and reliable as a straight up outboard. Am I crazy or are pure outboards better in terms of reliability?

I would have to fully agree with you. I have owned boats with only I/O and i am very unhappy with that type of configuration. As of with the Out-board its is very easy to maintain it where you can just trim the motor up all the way and flush it and you would prevent you Outboard from rotting in the water. Saltwater especially! I have my boat in saltwater and my outdrive has so much growth on it that i would not be even able to see where it is in the water. But there is also 1 thing to keep in mind! If you ever have a breakdown of a outboard the you would have to call a certified marine dealer to come and get the parts for you and install it for you vs the I/O where you can get the parts anywhere and fix/install it yourself! So there are things to factor in! Hope this helped! :joyous:

true but with a national forum and a question from the center I thought I'd go with the larger. You also have the puppy drum which is called a "red" by the South Carolinians. In our game laws there is no puppy drum it is under red drum. Kinda like the southern flounder/summer flounder thing.

Re: I/O vs outboard

There are some times when breaking the rules is required. When people start talking about mandating 'toons, I am going to start marching in the streets. But to your point . . . this Mod, in this single thread has trolled, hijacked, and brought in politics. I am a rebel with a cause, and I am going to be heard. Hear me roar, and all that stuff. Me and Helen Reddy to the rescue!!!

The good news is there are a few old guys around here that might get my ridiculous humor. Really bummed nobody caught my Danny/Red Drum reference. I guess it was a reach

Maybe Elton isn't so popular anymore? :blue:

Has this thread strayed? No! Look at the Forum Topic - Boat Topics And Questions (Not Engine Topics) and the thread title "I/O vs outboard". It was OT with the OP's very first post.
