I have been reapolsterting my Boat (an '87 Berretta - yes I know not the best boat but she is my first boat) and I have had to rebuild the wooden cover for the engine. I have used 1/2 cdx with a poly-fibergalss resin to seal the plywood. But I noticed that the orginal cover was glassed on the inside and what looks to be sprayed black. Is this blck material a fire retardant? If so, can anyone tell me where I might find such a product. While on the topic, is it worth it to install an insulation to help reduce noise? Thanks for any help with this.

As for the black paint i dont think it is fire retardent. I would however buy the foil faced insulation for it. That is fire retardent and will make it a much quieter ride for ya. Make sure you seal that plywood on all surfaces before you apolster it. Good luck.

Nobody's going to knock you for the make/model of your boat. It's just fiberglass and wood at the end of the day. If it makes you happy, then it's a cool boat to everybody else, too.

GMAc, When I redid my '88 SeaRay, I cut the 1/2" PT pieces to shape and use cloth and resin to connect them together at the seams. Cloth was installed on the inside and outside and provided plenty of strength at a lighter weight.

You want to reinforce the top rear edge with a 2X2 or so, since everyone likes to step on the motor cover when they enter/exit the boat, and that will be the weak part. I reinstalled the orig. foam insulation, using some spray adhesive.

Nice!

Hand gelcoat or spray? Use any special brand of resin?

That is one nice looking engine cover, what do you do with it it when you have to acces the engine, that looks like a heavy one?

Re: I/O Engine Cover Rebuild

Thanks for the advice. I wasnt downing the Barrettas but I could definately tell that the workmanship and quaility of materials is not the best. I wish I would taken pics of what I did so far. I too had rotted flooring, but was able to salvage most of it and just "patch in" under th jump seats. I too used 1/2 cdx for the side panels. The only mistake I think I made was not using Marine Grade vinyl on them. I have also broke out a sweing machine and made the new cover for the back seat which is one that in hinges.
I hope to get some pics soon of the finished project. Thanks again for your help.

:DI have been known to sew a few seat covers myself. I like the ones i make better then the store bought. I can add any colors and designs and trimmings that i like. I have actually gotten pretty good at it. Dont sweat the small stuff. If the boat floats and is safe and runs. Who the H E double L cares what everyone else thinks. :D

I put it on with a roller. Not sure what brand it was. I bought it from a guy who did some work to my boat. Wasn't an exact match, but in my color schema.

It's not really that bad. I just break it forward when I need to access my engine. I believe it originally had hinges at the base for that. However, getting it out of the boat requires a bit more finesse
